Before the events of BG3, Dmitri was not doing too hot mentally. He was going out with the expectation to not return, whether by his own hand or the wilds. He didn’t feel as though he could return to Baldur’s Gate and Cillian. If he was away when it happened, it would be better

Dmitri and Gale are… what’s the word, they understand each other. They are both deeply flawed and had been through so much, and the bond they share probably wouldn’t have happened without the events of the game. Probably wouldn’t have crossed paths, but Dmitri… wouldn’t be around either.
