to other places, it's smart to use rhetoric that avoids an issue (the monarchy) that might turn off a mass of relatively apolitical people that might otherwise agree with progressives/leftists on other issues for no clear gain.

I think it's a smart rhetorical choice. As someone born in a constitutional monarchy and a republican, the truth is that removing the guy with the crown won't in itself make material conditions better for marginalized and working people. With how relatively popular the UK monarchy is compared (1/2)
