The base of the glass landing on the table punctuated the end of the sentence like the final nail on the coffin cradling Kaveh’s dignity. Alhaitham blinked—as if he hadn’t heard correctly, which was impossible because he rarely wore his headphones at home these days.

“Huh?”

Kaveh resisted the urge to laugh. At Alhaitham’s confusion, but mostly at his own stupidity.

“Do you need a diagram?” he huffed instead. “I didn’t mean to. I tried to be vague, but she kept asking questions and…”

“…you thought she’d stop if you told her we’re dating?”

Kaveh swallowed down. Indeed, his mother had stopped at that.

(A series of white lies has led Kaveh's mother to believe he's living with his partner. Now she's visiting Sumeru, and he needs Alhaitham's help.)

THE DRAGON WHO CRIED WOLF

Unlike Fontainian banquets, the Duke's private fêtes bled intimate candlelight, with his automatons as servants, musicians and entertainers. They provided emancipation from society's constraints, masks for guests to show their true, wicked selves.

At midnight, the Duke would withdraw a pale amulet from his breast pocket, press its soft glow on lips swollen from his own indulgences and whisper his father's last words.

Ice crept up his illustrious guests' bodies, from their heeled shoes to their legs, torso and arms, a lethal vine stilling them in place, the masquerade's shade shifting to that of a nightmare. Within seconds they became still as stone and fell prey to the Golden Gate's Seal, to a fate worse than death.

Wriothesley walked out of the banquet hall, a satisfied smirk gracing his handsome features.
