A little plug for my article on Devon book sales c. 1700, which has gone online open access. tl;dr book auctions weren't just a London/Oxbridge thing: a flourishing second-hand book market centred on Exeter included auctions from the 1680s.

An RQ&R should be a moral obligation to review the resubmit paper. Take less reviews, do it better.
I'm both an author & an associate editor & in both roles a hill on which I will die is that attaching a new reviewer at R&R is bad practice at best & often unfair.

That said, given how often original reviewers refuse to review a R&R (no shade), editors are often stuck with how to evaluate a R&R.
Paper gets 2 positive reviews & 1 very critical one

Authors work very very hard on R&R

Journal sends it back to critical reviewer (only) and 1 new reviewer

Critical reviewer is quite positive about revision

New reviewer is negative

Editor sits on reviews for 1 month, then rejects

Authors sad

New acquisition for the Cromwell Museum… this ‘pocket’ road map of Huntingdonshire by Thomas Jenner. In 1643 Jenner republished Matthew Simmon's book 'A Direction for the English Traveller' which had 37 county maps accompanied by a distance table.

Oh Academia, you never love us back. Such cruel news.
