If one person refused, it was far easier to find someone willing to commit the act than engage in the work needed to threaten or browbeat the unwilling.

The best evidence suggests that duress was actually relatively rare as a phenomenon. Why? The architects of the Holocaust never really had much of a need to extort or harm people to enforce complicity. Why?

Because they could pretty much always find someone willing to do the deed.

I teach a seminar on the "Legacy of the Holocaust for Health Professionals" and one of the points that students report is most resonant is the duress defense, or the notion that people in the Third Reich felt compelled to commit atrocities b/c of what would happen if they didn't.

NEW-ish: Louisiana is suing FDA over its 2023 REMS change for mifepristone, which removed the in-person dispensing requirement. That change allowed mail or pharmacy dispensing of mife after significant data showed it was safe and effective. A few things to note about this new lawsuit.

We are angered and disheartened by the lack of progress our fields have made over the last 20 years and dismayed by the dismantling of health equity efforts happening in real time. In response, we are determined to reimagine academic public health and drive social change. This article examines the paradox of the humanities: they are simultaneously denigrated while non-humanities disciplines utilize (and champion) the very skills that are considered uniquely cultivated by a humanities education. My examination reveals that with the fissure between the humanities and other disciplines, knowledge about what the humanities do—and thus contribute to education in other fields—continues to diminish, furthering the cycle of marginalizing the humanities while also benefitting from them without attribution. I consider a time when a humanities education explicitly played a crucial role in the development of leaders, especially in business, because of the role the humanities played in the cultivation of analytical skills and the development of good judgement. I use this examination to consider what this lost connection means not only for the development of leaders but also for realizing the significant role that the humanities play across the professions and in our universities. The pedagogical role of the humanities in its development of analytical ability and judgment is crucial to public life from the flourishing of the business world to the lives we lead living with each other as fellow citizens.

Because I teach a lot about structural violence and epistemic injustice, my learners have become interested in repair and restorative justice. I've been pleasantly surprised to see how much our short units on apology are among the most popular. This paper will help!! 🙏🏻
