We have American problems which require American solutions. Some will be trivial, some will require us to remember the great undertakings of our past. We can, we have – we will – do great things. It takes but a leader to arouse the patriotic spirit.
It's striking that progressives like Tim Walz and Zohran Mamdani evoke the middle American attitude that, "Yes, we can fix these social problems because we're Americans and it's the right thing to do!" While the "America first" right only emulates failed and failing nation-states elsewhere.

At best Applebaum falls into the trap of thinking that telling people about the bad future ahead is sufficient to get people to avoid it, without telling people how to avoid it.
At worst she's saying the bad future inevitable, which is even more irresponsible at this current time.

As a person who is extremely familiar with online culture, Discord, and video gaming, those engravings were inexpressibly batshit insane in just how inconsistent and incongruous it was for them to be on bullet casings.

I doubt this was about MAGA, conservatism, liberalism, or leftism. I doubt the reasons here were internally consistent anymore than they were with the Minnesota shooter. Any reasons will be bizarre, veiled by irony and endless memes, and possibly the result of unaddressed mental illness.

That being said...that's not my issue here. As far as I can tell, there is no evidence that Tyler was in an antifa Discord server. Furthermore, as a user's server membership is private and this wasn't in the press conference, I don't see how Tim Pool/etc. could have obtained that information.

There is something in the statement Discord made to TMZ about that as well. Discord claims the messages between Tyler and his roommate were not on Discord, but that the roommate discussed those messages with a third party after the shooting.
