1976-OTD 1 of my adolescent heroes, #NYKnicks captain Willis Reed, had his # retired up 2 the rafters of MSG.He played his entire 11 season career with the NYK after graduating from Grambling & led them to 2 #NBA championships.Only 6’9”,he centered up against Wilt,Thurmond,Russell, & Unseld.WOW!🏀❤️

2-After the resignations, Acting Attorney General Robert Bork fires Cox. 4 Bork,that likely cost him a seat on the Supreme Court.4 Nixon,it likely cost him his Presidency. Word 2 our present day POTUS.Using the DOJ as an instrument of retaliation & having enemies lists will eventually cost you too.

1781-OTD British LORD Cornwallis surrendered to Gen. George Washington and French Comte de Rochambeau at the Battle of Yorktown. This essentially ended the Revolutionary War.The upstart American Colonies had defeated the greatest empire on earth.Very appropriate to remember on #NOKINGS weekend.!🇺🇸👏🏻🙏

1952-OTD THE 1st edition of the iconic #MadMagazine was released. As a boy growing up in the 50’s and 60’s , this was a constant companion and source of many a giggle in summer camp and in school. I probably missed 3/4 of the satire and failed to appreciate the amazing artwork- but I loved it!🙏👏🏻❤️

1777-OTD General Horatio Gates and his Continental Army defeated British General Burgoyne in the Battle of Saratoga, a huge boost for Independence. It helped Lafayette and Ben Franklin to convince Louis XVI to support the American cause🇺🇸👏🏻🙏

One of the greatest days in my life as a Mets fan. I was 15 and had followed the team since ‘62. That year was miraculous. So many key factors- Gil Hodges, Seaver, Cleon Jones, Tommie Agee, Jerry Koosman, Don Clendenon, Swoboda, black cats, shoe polish, landing on the moon. SIMPLY AMAZING!

The Cuban Missile Crisis which over the next 2,5 weeks embroiled us in a showdown with the USSR with Nuclear war consequences. Fortunately, JFK & Nikita KHrushchev found an off ramp to avoid WWIII

OTD in 1775, 250 yrs ago, the Continental Congress authorized the purchase of 2 warships. This essentially was the birth of the #USNavy. Admiral Esek Hopkins became the Naval commander and heroes like #JohnPaulJones became part of US history. Happy Birthday, #USN!!🎂🇺🇸🙏

1915-OTD heroic British nurse Edith Cavell was executed by the German Army 4 espionage.She had faithfully tended 2 WWI casualties from both sides while serving in a Belgian hospital.But she confessed 2 helping British prisoners escape through tunnels under the hospital-leading 2 the firing squad😢🙏

Remembering the 1837 bday of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw,the Boston born heroic commander of the 54th Massachusetts regiment,an all Black Union fighting force.He lost his life in the unsuccessful assault on Ft. Wagner in South Carolina in 1863.His service is honored by a beautiful bas-relief in Boston

1645-OTD a French nurse, Jeanne Mance, opened the 1st Hospital in Montreal and 2nd in North America, the Hotel Dieu. It was a major gift to the settlers of Nee France and set the bar high for settlers in New England. ⚕️🙏

65 yrs ago 2day the BC epic #Spartacus produced & starring #KirkDouglas & directed by ##StanleyKubrick,made its debut in NYC.Controversially, Douglas broke the Blacklist by hiring Dalton Trumbo as the screenwriter.It was a classic of hope that tyranny will lose in the end. Good thought 4 2day!

1947- POTUS Harry S. Truman delivers the 1st televised address 2 the public from the Oval Office. It seems incredibly lo-tech now but it raised the bar 4 political candidates by making their appearance & demeanor on the TV screen an important criteria 4 popularity. Not sure if that was a win?!🤨
