The 12z HRRR model run shows heavier bands keeping mid-level temperatures cooler in the NYC area tonight. Snowfall rates are as high as 2"per hour this evening. If this solution is correct, it would support less sleet mixing in and higher snowfall totals.

NWS has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the NYC metro area from 4pm today to 1pm Saturday. Their snowfall forecast is 5"- 9". However, if more sleet mixes in or subsidence between heavier bands occurs tonight, these totals will be less (more likely 3"-5").

Monitoring the potential for a winter storm around Friday night. High pressure over Quebec will support cold air damming in the Northeast, while low pressure to the south enhances warm-air advection aloft and frontogenesis. This could lead to a band of heavy snow that transitions to a wintry mix.
