Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

I in no way disagree yet I can't imagine a greater level of "success" than to manage to spend a life being any one of these things. It's not as though the world makes living a life in the service of others easy.
But yeah, the fact remains the world needs more of this.

That's the catch, the only people whom you'd feel the need to point this out to, well they honestly couldn't care less.
Repairing what damage is possible from the last 15yrs is going to take generations, even then we'll never be the same..
