Sunday reading #2. An annual read since @backlisted.bsky.social did an episode on it back in 2018.
The cover of Autumn Journal by Louis MacNeice

Milkweed, asters and bees.

Ducks on the left, geese on the right. The pond is full of migrating wild fowl.

Finished in less than 24 hours. This has immediately moved to the top of the list to be my favourite book of the year.

The unexpected benefits of having young adult children with you on a holiday weekend. Your day can begin with a breakfast taco made entirely without your input.

I think it will be very high on my list. I really should be working today, but I am likely to finish the book instead.

Sunday reading, Sunday listening and current audiobook. The book is a remarkable analysis of the nature of time, both like and unlike Groundhog Day.

Count Three & Pray by Berlin, bought back when for some reason I wanted Take My Breath Away (a separate decision I now question), but back then I listened to the balance once and never again.

Hockey game is over, but …

Accepting the inevitable, at least during the second intermission. They are even playing the audio.

Another Wednesday morning delight from @iammilliam.bsky.social. An Easter egg filled study of a musical oddity. Thanks to @backlisted.bsky.social I have both heard of and read Hapworth 16, 1924, but I know there are other references that have escaped me. Sign up. These alone are easily worth it.

Having now watched this, I am convinced it was the inspiration for the lighthouse episode of The Goodies.

Johnny does not lie. It is magnificent. Do not watch if you have any fear of water whatsoever.

Genuinely the greatest documentary the BBC have ever made - THE LAST LIGHTHOUSE - am utterly thrilled it's now on youtube. youtu.be/bc9qxyf_suI?...

Sunday reading and Sunday listening. The book is from a recent @backlisted.bsky.social and is yet another remarkable book I found only because of the podcast (and their guest @quantick.bsky.social). The music is from @iammilliam.bsky.social’s most recent Inventory.

Apparently, when in Scotland, the cure is “the mixture” which is something extracted as a by-product when distilling whiskey.

That sounds awful. You should watch Local Hero for some Scottish film ambience (and a great Mark Knopfler sound track). Scotland does sometimes decide to take out visitors. It once did me in with a bad fish pie.

Books read or listened to September 2025. Work and business travel seem to have wiped out reading time. Also, a rare case of no @backlisted.bsky.social books, although the Daphne Du Maurier and Caroline Crampton are clearly adjacent.

The opening set looks like a planet on the original Star Trek. I keep waiting for the crew to beam down.

Sunday reading, Sunday listening and current audiobook. The book is a fascinating look at Japan in the late 1950s. The audiobook is my favourite work of non-fiction so far this year. I would never have expected to be so engrossed by the history of a barge.

Not on Letterboxed, but last four watched.

Today seems to require this thought.

This diatribe from @iammilliam.bsky.social has made my morning. There is so much of this pointless background sound everywhere. It seems like half the new releases on Apple Music Classical are burbling piano mush. Thanks for this Andy.

Thank you for posting this. I made it tonight and the family have unanimously demanded that it be put into Sunday dinner rotation.
