If the setting in the Shounen leans more towards relatable realism (especially in a school setting like with My Hero Academia or Naruto), I would either ignore it (My Hero Academi) or despise it with a burning passion (Naruto). And it’s those types of Shonen that often include those shit tropes.

If the setting in the Shounen leans more towards escapist fantasy (like Dragon Ball), chances are I may enjoy it a lot, as long as there isn’t too much of “those unwanted tropes” that anime has had a bad reputation over (please avoid Seven Deadly Sins like the plague, it’s CRAMMED with that shit).

You’re not missing much with LOTR these days and I haven’t seen much of GoT nor ST.
Anime for me really depends, especially Shounen, on whether the setting either focuses more heavily on the freedom of escapist fantasy, or forcing itself make you relate with pedestrian references in our daily lives.
