A part of the issue is that psychology is such a broad field. clinical versus social versus cognitive sciences etc. they can be very different and it's easy to end up with a very shallow education in all of them rather than a deep understanding of one

as someone with a psych education: yes. I'm not sure if it's that the education is abysmal so much as an undergraduate education in psych is often so broad that you can learn a lot of nothing from it, especially if you got your degree before the replication crisis

Hypnosis works if you can imagine something that isn't real. It's using your imagination in a vivid way. Nobody is too smart to be hypnotized any more than you could be too smart to enjoy a movie or book. It's a cooperative process, & the subject can always snap themselves out

I don't think there's an objective answer to good or bad reasons, but I will say it's best to be focused on changes you want to see in yourself than how you want others to see or treat you. The latter is the path of disappointment and dysphoria.
