Ian McGuire, author of the 2016 novel The North Water, reads from #MartinAmis's The Rub of Time, in which an essay appears on the toll age can take on the writer's 'inner ear', and what Amis belives this meant for John Updike.

"[Martin Amis] said: I'm no longer reading with a pencil in my hand, and I knew that that was probably the closest he'd come to complaining to me about his state of health. I think the pencil represents an idea of the future. About a week later he was dead."’

Such a wonderful episode with John and Ian BTW, I finished listening this morning and immediately had to contact them. Your questions were so good.

There have been some excellent episodes of the podcast, particularly this summer, but this one is the best. A nuanced discussion that brings many of Amis's complexities and contradictions to the fore. Love the episodes that feature people who knew him personally.

Hi Martin, glad to be introduced by Jack here. I was also on the never-populous-but-always-dwindling J Diedrick ‘Martin Amis Page’ all those years ago, as was of course Geoff Norcott, now famous. Who were you? What memories do you have of it? Jules Clinch? Bill Jarma?

A spot of cross-pollination here as Martin Locock @mlocock.bsky.social, Amis fan and fellow podcast creator, offers his two cents on Yellow Dog, an underdog novel in the Amis corpus that he argues brings more pleasure than its critics would have you believe.

Here are the 3 reasons why 👇

Really enjoyed this episode, which is unsparing with Amis's failings while extolling his virtues to the stars.

I think this might be the best episode yet of the podcast. Some excellent questions and an enlightening "take" from Geoff on Amis that brought together some of the ideas discussed in previous episodes. Much to think about, as always.
