Summary:
"It's our wedding vows," Miles tells him.
Phoenix takes the paper gingerly, already bracing himself for the worst. He reads through it quickly, his heart sinking with each line.
He was right.
The terms are stark, and unforgiving-an agreement he does not want to sign but has to:
- Phoenix Wright cannot initiate a divorce, especially not during the election period. He will not publicly disclose his name or face as Miles Edgeworth's husband. He is to remain invisible, a shadow in his own life.
- The penalty for any violation: two million dollars.

Miles's fingers twitch. "Do you always mock people who keep you upright?"
Phoenix shakes his head slightly, his voice barely above a whisper. "You're shaking."
"So are you," Miles replies, almost too quickly. The admission hangs between them, startling in its honesty.
For a heartbeat, neither of them moves. The fire cracks somewhere behind them, the only sound in the stillness.

After she leaves, Miles lingers at the window again, the tension between them a quiet constant. He doesn't apologise again, not directly, but his actions speak louder than any confession. He ensures the physicians bring Phoenix the best medicine. He replaces the wilted lilies with fresh ones. He orders the fire lit before dusk.
It is careful, deliberate affection, the kind of love that does not yet know how to name itself.
"Are you warm enough?" he asks.
Phoenix nods, though the gesture cost him effort.
"You don't have to hover."
"Someone should," Miles says. "You have a talent for pretending you're fine until you collapse."
Phoenix manages a weak smile. "Old habits."
Miles looks away, the firelight catching in his eyes.
"You never did learn when to stop."
Something unspoken stretches between them - an old argument, worn down to tenderness.
"I could say the same for you," Phoenix murmurs.
That earns him a small huff of breath, not quite laughter, but close.
