They don't all have huge, enormous racks. They also usually have two antlers. Sometimes you'll meet a buck with an injured or deformed antler, and unfortunately it can mean he'll have trouble growing one from that pedicle in the following seasons. Like a unicorn, but sadder. Like this youngster with his head held low, coming up our trail to meet face-on with me in the dappled December light. He's just over a year old I'd guess, judging by the tiny spike he does have on one side. He gave me a Flehmen response (not pictured) too, being December, which was funny since I smell nothing like a doe. (*sniffs armpit)
