The government has executed more people in 2025 than any year in over a decade — and there are five more executions scheduled over the next week.

Just a handful of states are responsible for these executions, and they’re increasingly out of step with public opinion.

ICE has stolen precious time from the Contreras-Cervantes family. The scope of this injustice is why Lupita, despite the tremendous hardships she and her family are facing, wants to share her family’s story.

For nearly 17 years, as a member of CATA's Board (8 as Chair), I have worked to build a seamless, multimodal transportation network across our region. This millage, and the current partnership between CATA & EATRAN, are hugely important steps toward accomplishing that goal.

🚌 Thanks to grants secured and managed by CATA, Delta Twp is currently benefiting from an extension of Route 3 and expanded Spec-Tran service, Charlotte & Grand Ledge Connectors, and CATA Rydz microtransit. This millage will allow those services to continue and expand public transit in Delta Twp.

ICE has bought access to an “all-in-one” surveillance tool that gives it updated location data from hundreds of millions of phones, putting us all at risk of being tracked.

The government can’t be allowed to surveil us simply for having a cell phone.
ICE to Buy Tool that Tracks Locations of Hundreds of Millions of Phones Every Day
Documents show that ICE has gone back on its decision to not use location data remotely harvested from peoples' phones. The database is updated every day with billions of pieces of location data.

Our client Jose Contreras turned 34 this week in immigration detention with his family singing Happy Birthday to him virtually. We will continue fighting to bring Jose home so he and his kids can celebrate his release – and a belated birthday – together. Families belong together.

President Trump is deploying armed and masked federal agents to cities across the country, endangering our rights and safety.

But state and local leaders have the power to protect their communities.

A foundational principle of this country is that the military shouldn’t police our communities — and a federal judge agrees.
Black graphic with a quote in red and white text: "This country has a longstanding and foundational tradition of resistance to government overreach, especially in the form of military intrusion into civil affairs… This historical tradition boils down to a simple proposition: this is a nation of Constitutional law, not martial law.”

Whether you're in Chicago or any other U.S. city, remember federal agents and military troops are bound by the Constitution.

Know your rights if you're approached by federal forces.

White and blue text: "Know Your Rights when interacting with federal agents, local law enforcement, or military troops: If you get stopped, ask if you’re free to go. If they say yes, walk or drive away.
If you’re questioned, you can say, “I want to remain silent.” In some cases, you may be required to provide your name, address, immigration status, and/or ID.
If an official asks to search you or your belongings, you have the right to say no, but do not obstruct access. They may have authority to conduct the search anyway. If they begin searching you or your vehicle, say clearly: “I do not consent to a search.”
You do not have to unlock your phone or give government officials your password without a warrant. For additional security, turn off biometric identification such as Face ID.
If law enforcement officers arrest you, you have a right to ask why. Otherwise, say you wish to remain silent and ask for a lawyer immediately. Don't sign, say, or agree to anything without a lawyer present.
If you believe your rights have been violated, when you can, write down everything you remember, get contact information for witnesses, and take photographs of any injuries."
Light blue ACLU logo. Blue arrow pointing to the right. Black background. White and blue text: "Know Your Rights when witnessing federal agents, local law enforcement, or military activity in public:
You have the right to talk about and publicize truthful information that you obtain lawfully, including about what law enforcement officers are doing and where they are doing it.
You have the right to tell people their legal rights. If you are a lawyer, make clear you are not giving legal advice.
You have the right to photograph or film anything in plain view, including federal buildings and law enforcement.
These officials can’t confiscate or demand to view your photographs or video without a warrant, nor can they delete data under any circumstances. However, they may order you to move a reasonable distance away. If you think a command is unlawful, it’s safest to follow the order, document the interaction, and challenge it later.
You can ask for officers’ names and badge numbers, as well as who to call if there are follow-up questions."

NEW: Illinois Gov. Pritzker announced President Trump intends to federalize 300 state National Guard troops “in the coming hours" over objections from state and city leaders.

We resolutely condemn this potential escalation. It's a power grab meant to intimidate and torment Chicago's communities.

🥂 A while back, Laurie and I attended an event at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit where they unveiled a student's label design that was selected to appear on MAWBY's CCS Cuvée. So, it was neat to have one of the bottles show up as part of our Fizz Club membership.

National Guard troops serve an important role in helping our communities during real crises — but advancing the president's political agenda isn't one of them.

Military troops patrolling on our streets must not be normalized.
Brown quote graphic reading "We fish families out of flood waters. We shovel ambulances through the snow to get to women delivering babies... patrolling the monuments, creating this sort of military net that’s descended on these urban areas — that’s not something a lot of people signed up for.” Quote is attributed to Brigadier General Paul G. Smith, former assistant adjutant general of Massachusetts National Guard. Protest photo at the top with people holding signs spelling out "No troops on our streets"
