Welcome to the American petrostate

By Michael E. Mann | Nov 7, 2024
@BulletinAtomic

The U.S. is now a failed Democratic state. With the reelection of Donald Trump..the U.S. is now poised to become an authoritarian state ruled by plutocrats & fossil fuel interests.

Welcome to the American petrostate
I’ve long said that the obstacles to stabilizing warming below catastrophic levels aren’t physical or technological; they are entirely political in nature, and political obstacles can be overcome. But...

If it was because of narcotrafficking, why has Trump pardoned narcotraffickers? If it was because Maduro is an authoritarian (he is), why is Trump in love with Putin, nevermind Kim Jong-Un and Viktor Orban?

Oil, conflict, and climate change – there is a direct connection.
The real kicker here is that if US companies do succeed in ramping up Venezuela’s oil, it’s some of the dirtiest and most carbon intensive in the world. And it’s cheap to produce (PdVSA says $5/barrel, probably closer to $25).

Trump just said what it is all about.
The sooner the world sheds its addiction to fossil fuels, the better. The alternatives are available, plentiful and cheaper.

And if you’re thinking, “I’m just one person, what difference can I make?” my pinned post has you covered:
I’m a scientist who studies how climate change impacts our lives and the places we love.

Most of us are worried, but many feel stuck on what to do. If that's the way you feel, check out this list below!

We can’t fix it alone, but I know we can together. 💚

When I decided to become a climate scientist, I thought I’d only need do it for a decade or so – because it was so obviously urgent, surely we would fix it by then? And then I would go back to studying galaxies.

Now, thirty years in, I have a different plan for what’s next ⬇️😄

Pulling climate data offline, canceling research grants, and de-funding scientific institutions doesn't just suppress climate information. It weakens the foundation we rely on to make good decisions of any kind.

This should not be shrugged aside. They have stopped with the fake 22 million illegal immigrants things and are flat out saying we want to deport 10's of millions of citizens and legal residents from "third world countries" Basically they are advocating removing 1/3 of the population on a gov site.

This is the Viktor Orban model of creating an illiberal democracy, although Trump wants to go even further than Orban. He's shooting for Putin's Russia.
As it happens, I have experience with high-level government demands to stop an explosive, accurate story from running, and I also have experience with 60 Minutes spiking a story I was involved in, so I have thoughts about the travesty at CBS. If you want some journalism anecdotes, here are a lot:

I’m tired of having to talk people out of diplomatic and graceful explanations of this crap. 😫
