The 50th anniversary of IDEA is a moment to celebrate and take action. Before IDEA, millions of children with disabilities were denied access to quality education. With the anniversary this Saturday, NEA is sharing ways to talk about the importance of protecting students’ rights this holiday season.

We are with Justin & the Charlotte community defending our schools: "If we genuinely believe in the promise of public education, we have to defend it...And it means standing together with our students so they know that every single one of them pertenece aquí."

Families want schools where every child feels welcomed, supported, and able to learn. From Texas to Pennsylvania to Ohio, voters elected Democrat-backed candidates in some of the nation’s largest school systems; a clear sign that communities are choosing inclusive public schools over division.
In culture war backlash, Democrats sweep school boards

Educators know the recent interruption of SNAP benefits will hit students hard. Yet across the country, education support professionals—many of whom rely on SNAP themselves—are stepping up to make sure students and their families don’t go hungry.

There is growing food insecurity in America with rising costs of groceries and disruptions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, but education support professionals are helping fill the gaps.

This week we mark the 50th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). IDEA made educational spaces more inclusive and accessible...but there is work to be done.
50 Years of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act | NEA
Before IDEA, there was no measure of whether students with disabilities were receiving an appropriate education. But there is much more the law can accomplish.

On #TransDayOfRemembrance, we honor our trans siblings lost to fatal violence and their impact.

We will not stop fighting until trans people are not just able to survive, but thrive and live safe, full, and joyful lives. May our collective grief, reflection, and action lead to a better future.

Shifting vital education programs across federal agencies weakens civil rights protections, undermines support for low-income and first-generation students, and threatens equal opportunity.

Closing the Education Dept. would harm the very students it exists to serve.

BREAKING: The Trump administration says it will transfer many of the Department of Education’s programs to other agencies, effectively attempting to dismantle much of the department.

This is an attempt to get around the law, which states that only Congress can unilaterally eliminate the DOE.

Shame on this administration.

Their latest attempt to dismantle the Dept of Education—during American Education Week—is illegal and immoral. Not only do they want to starve and steal from our students—they want to rob them of their futures.

Anyone who claims to care about children should be livid.

Research shows teens need more sleep, and later school start times can help. But change is complex and must include the voices of educators and families. Real solutions require local input and community-driven planning.

Everyone agrees students need more sleep. But even as districts have adopted later school start times, the momentum behind this change seems to have stalled. “Are we really thinking this through?” asks one educator.

Educators deserve balance. But a new @RAND.org report shows that most teachers struggle to find work-life balance, and too few school districts are taking steps to help. Smaller class sizes, more planning time, and supportive leadership make all the difference.
