you will definitely feel a little bit of the jank going back, and 1 will be a harder play than 2, but you might enjoy them both just as much :] the stories are pretty formulaic and the protagonists are much younger, so the games have more of a comedic tone that's really been toned down in 3

if both monsters used a breath attack or a flying attack or a tackle. Those were fun at first. Gone now. All in all I feel like Stories 1 was the seed of something great, Stories 2 was an awkward teenage phase where they improved a lot of QOL, and in Stories 3 they have finally gotten it right.

use skills far more often, making HtHs less common. Which is a little sad to me since imo it's part of the game's identity, but it makes combat more engaging since you can no longer cheese by doing a double attack 5 turns in a row. 1 and 2 also had quick time events where you had to mash a button

Stories 1 had a rocky release. It didn't sell well and launched very close to Pokemon Sun & Moon, which is obviously a terrible time to release a 3DS creature collector. It was a little clunky, and very heavy on the grind because of the limits of the Rite of Channeling. Even so, I loved it dearly.
