Jongsang, gummy bears for @rrnchg.bsky.social

A jumbo-sized plastic jar of gummy bears had been included in their green room snacks this time. Possibly because it was getting close to Jongho’s birthday, but if there had been a note with them at the beginning, it was long gone now and he hadn’t seen it. It didn’t matter; intended or not, he’s getting a gift from it now: watching Yeosang line them all up on the table.

Yeosang had been early in the hair and makeup schedule for the day, so he’s porcelain perfect, hair in waves that mean he can’t lie down anywhere to sneak a nap, biting his tongue just a little as he arranges his gummy bear grid with serious concentration. In the background, Mingi starts singing at the top of his lungs. Yeosang doesn’t even blink.

Jongho shifts closer, not wanting to raise his voice unnecessarily. “Is there a pattern?”

“There needs to be a good distribution of colors.”

Jongho nods, looking at the arrangement with a newly critical eye. It does look like Yeosang has been keeping any one color from clumping up.

“What are they doing?”

Yeosang pulls another gummy bear out of the jar. A red one this time. He sets it in front of all the other bears, facing them. “Listening to you sing.”

And with that, their boss left, leaving Mingi staring at his new charge, frozen as he tried to figure out what exactly he needed to do. He hadn’t even known they were filling a position in this department. What was Wooyoung even here to do?

Wooyoung smiled at him.

This did not help Mingi get his shit together. He swallowed, probably a little to obviously.

Wooyoung’s smile softened almost imperceptibly into something less polite, more natural. “Hey. I like your bracelets.”

Mingi reached over to spin one of the beaded ones, brain coming at least partially back online. “Thanks, I made them.”

Wooyoung’s eyes lit up in excitement, his smile became a grin, and Mingi’s brain crashed again.

This was going to be a long day, Mingi could tell. But maybe not a bad one.

“I hate this,” Mingi whispers.

“It could be worse, Pink. We could be dead.” Yunho’s voice is like silk, low and smooth. Mingi swallows hard.

“I knew your brother was a fucking cunt.”

Yunho sighs. “He’s always felt slighted, but for no reason. The irony is that he’s never shown an ounce of interest in ruling his own country.” As he speaks, he slides his fingertips over to Mingi’s knee, tracing slow, lazy patterns over the outside seam of his trousers. Mingi watches, helpless, his heart pounding like a drum in his chest.

“Yeah, well, framing the worthless Flower King Consort seems like something an apathetic royal would think up.”

“Don’t say that,” Yunho replies sharply. His hand suddenly curls around Mingi’s knee and squeezes, once. Mingi feels a sudden empathic rush from Yunho, something that feels very much like…longing?

“What, that Ryeom’s apathetic?”

“That you’re worthless.”

Mingi snorts. “Your brother’s made it very clear how he feels about me.”

“My brother isn’t me.” His hand carefully unfurls, his thumb moving back and forth in a gentle circle at the bend of Mingi’s knee.

<i>He promised not to touch me</i>, Mingi thinks, but he can’t bring himself to care. Instead, he leans into Yunho’s touch like a leaf seeking sunlight. “Did the Honey Thistle make you say that?” he says with a weak laugh.

I really loved the details you have like their road snacks and the sand and blankets that give this real world grounding to the way you conjure up mingi’s empathy abilities as a low level constant drain that yunho and the trip balance out

I’ve always really liked analysis and pulling things apart (more in a curious way?) and figuring out what parts of a story give it what kind of effect on me? and doing the same to my own writing, treating each story kind of like a recipe I tinker with

for me, I need dialogue and facial expressions and body language, and maybe a bit of interaction with the setting, but describing the setting can totally come later - internal monologue depends on how easy the writing’s flowing, I leave it out first draft if writing’s not going as well as
