I guess I’m an old man now? Bummer! Government worker by day, video gamer by night (and sometimes during the day), avid reader.

According to Wikipedia, today is the 20th anniversary of The 1UP Show. I choose to believe this is true.

I miss this work. More, I miss my old coworkers. Still the best and most fun job I ever had.

I’ll let Jane and Eric’s killer tune race through my mind today.

Also, this movie had an even greater sin than the last movie… Tron. He is a program. The titular character. He does not exist in this film whatsoever. Legacy had Tron for a tiny bit. This movie couldn’t even bother to mention the name. Ares vs Tron in Encom’s server grid coulda been nice to see.

Saw someone I respect say how much better Ares is than Legacy in terms of story, soundtrack, visuals, and I just totally disagree. It expects that you have full knowledge of the first two movies and I appreciate that, but the story it dropped from those movies just felt way too important to ignore.

NIN was good, but feels so similar to 2010s NIN that it’s almost unremarkable. Been a fan of NIN for decades and it just feels like more from the most uninteresting era of the band. When it comes to Legacy, I would consider that to be Daft Punk’s best work. Really hard to compete with that.

Tron: Ares was… mediocre. Glad I saw it, but I don’t think the last act was very good. Good action scenes, but the pacing (also editing?) feels wonky. Leto as Ares was good, and it felt like he was able to escape the “Jared Leto” of it all until the very end of the film, where he is full Jared Leto.

My mind says keep playing Silksong because it’s the “right thing to do”, but my heart really wants me to buy and play Everybody’s Golf Hot Shots instead.

I don’t even remember the name of that podcast. I vaguely remember it had Teanah and Sam on it. I kinda want to look it up and see if I can find it.

For context on that tax situation, the raise was me making partial commission while earning a wage, and the gov’t was more than happy to get a piece.

When doing my taxes today I was reminded that I wrote a blog over 15 years ago on 1UP.com that had nothing to do about games, but the fact that a raise I got had me making less due to taxes. That blog was featured on a 1UP podcast but I was so angry about my pay issue that I refused to listen to it.

I haven’t tried to play FF7 Rebirth, Civ VII or Metaphor: ReFantazio at all since they were released on PC (and I pre-ordered them all like a shmuck), but I blasted through all of Avowed in just over a week and want to do a second playthrough already.

So Avowed was pretty dang good. I think I found a sweet spot where I pissed off the fewest people that I cared about while simultaneously making decisions that felt right for my character.

I played the whole game as a gunslinger ranger and it was great. Excited to try a new build next time I play.

Slow text, slow systems (map, inventory, box management), slow connection to network services, unskippable animations, design choices that slow combat and capturing, etc. It’s very rare that a game makes me wish a 2x speed boost was permanently on, but Scarlet / Violet could really use it.

I took a break from Pokémon after completing the Teal Mask DLC shortly after its release, but I decided today to finally get into Indigo Disk. I forgot how much I truly dislike this era of Pokémon. Not because of graphics or story, but because everything feels excessively, unnecessarily slow.

If a character in a book or story at some point laughs so hard that they need to get down on the ground and roll around, I immediately write off the author as a total putz.

I’m not sure what the general consensus is on the most recent episode of What We Do in the Shadows, but that felt like a really weird episode. I really liked the Colin / Nadja plot, but everything else going on felt pretty boring and pointless. These are some odd choices for a show that’s ending.

I haven’t commented on an article or really been part of any online communities since the times of 1UP.com, but somehow @aftermath.site has gotten me to post comments on pieces about cleaning supplies and UMDs. I don’t know what this means, but it feels noteworthy. People should subscribe there!

I switched to iPhone for the first time in my life almost a year ago, and I can say with confidence that the way Apple handles the transfer of local music from one device to another is abysmal. I might just end up copying my music over to my old Android phone and make it a dedicated music player.

I came across someone with their name spelled ‘Christerfer’ today and was shaken to my very core.

I should be playing the two games I just bought, Dragon Ball Sparking Zero and Metaphor: ReFantazio, but instead I’m back on Planet Crafter. The new planet that they just released is pretty great!

Up next looks to be Lower Decks, the first show in this new era of Star Trek that I am actually excited to watch (talking myself into watching Discovery and Picard took a few years, but Lower Decks was a show I wanted to jump into right away.) I am looking forward to this!

Last thing to mention is that this show really screwed up with its original characters. Written poorly then thrown away instead of being properly developed. That’s more of a season 2 slam than anything, but this season got rid of Laris as soon as possible, and basically omitted Elnor completely.
October 7, 2024 at 2:04 AM
Also, the end of the last episode had the return of Q, which should feel cheap considering he “died” at the end of season 2, but as far as I’m concerned that season was so bad that this feels more like a slam on that season’s ideas than a glaring plot hole introduced after the fact.

If a starship can move like that, getting hit by torpedos should be impossible. Yeah I know it’s Data doing all the work, but you’re telling me starships can’t automate similar movement? Please. A minor thing for sure, but after watching that scene this came to mind and ruined it a bit for me.

Lowlights are the Changelings, which evolved to be harder to detect but extremely weak and stupid versions of themselves. Masked changeling henchmen is a stupid idea. Worf felt a little dopey. Also, the RotJ-style assault run inadvertently shows that all other starship pilots are all really bad.
October 7, 2024 at 1:53 AM
Highlights for me are the reunion of the TNG cast (obviously), most of the cameos, and the fact that they gave the Enterprise-D a ‘Return of the Jedi’-style Death Star II assault run was pretty fun on first watch. I like the banter between everyone as well, which just speaks to actor chemistry.

All done with season 3 of Star Trek: Picard. My favourite season of any of the new Trek I’ve seen by far (which is all of Discovery and all of Picard). I think the team up between the neutered Borg and “evolved” Changelings was a bit dumb, but the TNG reunion was powerful enough to overcome it.
