I guess I’m an old man now? Bummer! Government worker by day, video gamer by night (and sometimes during the day), avid reader.

According to Wikipedia, today is the 20th anniversary of The 1UP Show. I choose to believe this is true.

I miss this work. More, I miss my old coworkers. Still the best and most fun job I ever had.

I’ll let Jane and Eric’s killer tune race through my mind today.

Tron: Ares was… mediocre. Glad I saw it, but I don’t think the last act was very good. Good action scenes, but the pacing (also editing?) feels wonky. Leto as Ares was good, and it felt like he was able to escape the “Jared Leto” of it all until the very end of the film, where he is full Jared Leto.

My mind says keep playing Silksong because it’s the “right thing to do”, but my heart really wants me to buy and play Everybody’s Golf Hot Shots instead.

When doing my taxes today I was reminded that I wrote a blog over 15 years ago on 1UP.com that had nothing to do about games, but the fact that a raise I got had me making less due to taxes. That blog was featured on a 1UP podcast but I was so angry about my pay issue that I refused to listen to it.

I haven’t tried to play FF7 Rebirth, Civ VII or Metaphor: ReFantazio at all since they were released on PC (and I pre-ordered them all like a shmuck), but I blasted through all of Avowed in just over a week and want to do a second playthrough already.

So Avowed was pretty dang good. I think I found a sweet spot where I pissed off the fewest people that I cared about while simultaneously making decisions that felt right for my character.

I played the whole game as a gunslinger ranger and it was great. Excited to try a new build next time I play.

I took a break from Pokémon after completing the Teal Mask DLC shortly after its release, but I decided today to finally get into Indigo Disk. I forgot how much I truly dislike this era of Pokémon. Not because of graphics or story, but because everything feels excessively, unnecessarily slow.

If a character in a book or story at some point laughs so hard that they need to get down on the ground and roll around, I immediately write off the author as a total putz.

I’m not sure what the general consensus is on the most recent episode of What We Do in the Shadows, but that felt like a really weird episode. I really liked the Colin / Nadja plot, but everything else going on felt pretty boring and pointless. These are some odd choices for a show that’s ending.

I haven’t commented on an article or really been part of any online communities since the times of 1UP.com, but somehow @aftermath.site has gotten me to post comments on pieces about cleaning supplies and UMDs. I don’t know what this means, but it feels noteworthy. People should subscribe there!

I switched to iPhone for the first time in my life almost a year ago, and I can say with confidence that the way Apple handles the transfer of local music from one device to another is abysmal. I might just end up copying my music over to my old Android phone and make it a dedicated music player.

I came across someone with their name spelled ‘Christerfer’ today and was shaken to my very core.

I should be playing the two games I just bought, Dragon Ball Sparking Zero and Metaphor: ReFantazio, but instead I’m back on Planet Crafter. The new planet that they just released is pretty great!

All done with season 3 of Star Trek: Picard. My favourite season of any of the new Trek I’ve seen by far (which is all of Discovery and all of Picard). I think the team up between the neutered Borg and “evolved” Changelings was a bit dumb, but the TNG reunion was powerful enough to overcome it.
October 7, 2024 at 1:36 AM
I’m four episodes in to season 3 of Star Trek: Picard and so far it’s been a huge improvement over the previous season. I know the show is leaning heavy on nostalgia, but given what they delivered last season I’m more than happy to be pandered to in this fashion.

So, uh, I don’t know what general consensus is on season 2 of Star Trek: Picard, but I just finished watching it and it felt real bad to me. Like, “turn your brain off to get through this whole season of Discovery” bad. Sloppy, trite, pandering, pointless.

It’s been about a week since I finished season 1 of Star Trek: Picard and and for some reason I am absolutely dreading starting the second season. I really need to force myself to watch it though since I’m really looking forward to Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks and Prodigy.

For some reason the YouTube algorithm, unprompted, has started suggesting 1960s-1970s electronic music for me to listen to. It might be the best thing YouTube has ever done for me.

That Dairy Queen Blizzard I just had helped remind me that eating a whole thing of ice cream for the first time in ages when you’re in your mid-to-late 30s is possibly one of the dumbest things you could do to yourself.

Just finished season 1 of Star Trek: Picard. I don’t know what public opinion on this show is, and I was dreading watching it, but after coming off of Discovery season 5, I much preferred this show. I dig the crew less than Discovery’s, but I felt that the writing was more… competent, I suppose?
September 25, 2024 at 8:07 AM
I finally finished Star Trek: Discovery. I think that my main takeaway from the show is that a great cast was always hampered by poor writing, and their need for flash over substance. Continuously going to the “seasonal galactic threat” well was awful. Also, the plot of the last season was boring.

The amount of discourse I see on this site (thanks to some algorithms somewhere no doubt) towards DS9 over any other Trek show really warms my heart. We may be in the minority, but damn do I love it here.
a man in a suit is talking to a group of people and says " there are dozens of us dozens "
Alt: Character Tobias Fünke (played by David Cross) from the television show ‘Arrested Development’ stands in the middle of a crowded Christmas pageant, shouting “there are dozens of us. Dozens!”

I noticed Tilly drinking a Slug-o-Cola when I was watching Star Trek: Discovery last night. I’m guessing Quark’s pitch on DS9 that the drink’s slogan should market to women by telling them it’ll “keep their teeth that lovely shade of green” didn’t fully make it to the 32nd century.
September 19, 2024 at 10:23 PM
Is it wrong of me to hold off on watching the last season of Star Trek: Discovery because I’m really apprehensive about jumping to the next series, Star Trek: Picard? Maybe I should forget that show exists and just move on to watching Lower Decks and Prodigy.
