This case is a reminder of the urgency of conserving forests to protect the species which inhabit them. 🌿
These serious injuries, possibly caused by a dog attack, led the specialist to recommend euthanasia as the most compassionate option to avoid more suffering. This case is not an isolated event. Habitat loss due to deforestation is exposing these primates to increasing dangers.
After being evaluated by a veterinarian, the animal was found to have perforations in the skin of the abdomen, a complete dislocation between two lumbar vertebrae and severe damage to the spinal cord, without possibility of recovery through surgery or medical treatment.
A San Martin titi monkey (𝘗𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘣𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦), a species endemic to San Martín, Peru, and Critically Endangered, was recently found injured on a road. The person who found it alerted the Regional Environmental Authority (ARA), who came to its rescue.

It is the rare academic article with images that alone convey a conclusion. "Increasing Food Provisioning and Habituation Threaten the Endangered Lion-Tailed Macaque" (November 2024 Primate Conservation @peopleprimate.bsky.social) shows why you should never feed the monkeys. #primates

‼️If you find injured wildlife, follow the examples above: stay calm, avoid interacting directly with the animal and report the case to the authorities. Every effort, accompanied by institutions like NPC, helps to protect the wildlife that enriches our environments. 🌳🦉✨
In another case, workers at a restaurant found an owl (𝘔𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘱𝘴 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘣𝘢) inside a disused oven. Upon notifying (ARA), we were able to rescue it and ensure the bird's recovery.
A toucanet (𝘗𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘴) was found unconscious on a motorcycle by a girl who, together with her parents, took it to a veterinarian, who then contacted the Regional Environmental Authority (ARA). Thanks to their quick action, the bird recovered well.
🦉 Wild birds in the city: a call for responsible coexistence
Two recent rescue cases in Moyobamba should remind us all of the importance of living responsibly with the wildlife that surrounds us.

NPC & the Regional Environmental Authority of San Martin recently rescued & released a pygmy anteater (Cyclopes didactylus), thanks to a report from the public.

Every effort counts to conserve the biodiversity that surrounds us. 🌿

There's another, very good list of primate people that I did not know about when I made this. There's some crossover but there will be differences too! Check out this starter pack and please do send your suggestions for additions to the list!

Now that @nature.com has joined us, here’s a #ThrowbackThursday to our study on wild capuchins deliberately breaking stones and making flakes.

I got lucky filming this activity, when I stayed behind while my team climbed a sandstone plateau. The monkeys turned up, and the rest is (pre)history 🧪🐒🏺

2024 was the year of the Fake Rescue.

Exhibit #1: Spot the Scam, from Social Media Animal Cruelty Coalition, documented the rise of this video genre. #Primates were second only to cats as those intentionally imperiled for content creators to "rescue." 1/4

Listen to the absolutely wonderful duet of the San Martin titi monkey! I recorded this many years ago near Moyobamba in Peru, and I really never tire of listening...
