one piece of evidence in favor of this is that he seems to not give a fuck about any screen adaptations lmao. like shining and misery were sheer luck on his end imo. and many of his other better adaptations were purely in spite of the source text (long walk, it, for example)

also this borders on me being delulu but i kinda think he never even meant for that. like in my head canon he remains the pulp fiction writer he started out as, and he decided early on to be the guy pushing volume over quality.

okay my honest take on him tho is that he drastically needs an editor. like he has been firing on all cylinders for 60 years and in that time produces a few good ones. 95% of his works should have been rejected and with a better editor he could way higher regarded.

I found a 19th century Cat Villain!

A huge chonk of a fluffy cat sitting on a table near an open fire. The cat is cream and grey and appears to be shaped like a barrel in a fur coat. They are scowling fiercely with their moustache and bewhiskered ears apparently flowing back into the cold wind. There's a definite vibe that this villainous cat twirls their moustache as they evict orphans into the aforementioned blizzard and think Scrooge was an easy-going lightweight. They are magnificent.
