I contributed a chapter titled "Not Afraid to Show a Savage Face" about the evolution of Andy Cohen's narrative voice from the start of Silkworm through a palpable change in the Touch & Go years. It took a lot of restraint not to spill the beans on this book!

The loser of this game should be decided by which team has a member fall asleep in the dugout first.

I never doubted you, Jack Flaherty. I knew you were up there saying “I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear” to yourself.

I’d put the number of times I thought “Oh THIS is the titular bullet in the head” at 5. John Woo is not one for restraint or subtlety.

Overall it’s very good, but the Deer Hunter heaviness means I’m less eager to revisit it than The Killed / Hard Boiled / A Better Tomorrow 1 and 2 / Once a Thief.

Finishing John Woo’s Bullet in the Head today and I was unprepared for the degree to which it is a cross between The Deer Hunter (friends traumatized and broken by the Vietnam War) and Rambo: First Blood Part II (insane shootouts with the Vietcong). There’s a lot of bloodshed, hard to call it heroic

Now watching John Woo’s Bullet in the Head, which I’d started as a Workout Watch (on mute with music on headphones). The benefits of a normal viewing are clear: the introductory montage of wayward youth antics reminiscent of Rebel Without a Cause is set to a zany sax cover of “I’m a Believer.”

I’ve seen 21/38 films in Criterion Channel’s Hong Kong Action Classics. May not get through all of the unwatched titles, but I started with Sammo Hung’s Pedicab Driver.

It’s all over the place tonally: ribald farce, serious romantic drama, lessons on Respecting Women, friendship hijinks.

22 seconds faster per mile. Not quite up to my fastest times (although I was in that range for miles two and three), but I’m happy with it.

Watching Dracula (1931) for the first time, although it doesn’t feel that way because of all the other Draculas and Nosferatus I’ve seen. Dwight Frye goes all out as Renfield, but this is Bela Lugosi’s picture, and it’s exponentially better when he’s on screen.

I’ve only heard good things about its quality but yeah that’s a hard cinematic experience to choose right now.
