Hi, I’m David, a freelance writer. I’m the host of the New Ghost Stories podcast (currently on hiatus) and book series. Posting about books, things I’ve seen and places I’ve been.

Jas De Bouffan and its grounds were the subject of many of Cezanne’s portraits. At the house today they helpfully place prints of his paintings ahead of the scenes they portray, so you can see how he interpreted the scene and how things have changed over time. #art #cezanne #provence

Back to the Cezanne trail… Jas De Bouffan was the artist’s family home. It was bought by his father, who did want a more stable career for his son. He was, however, ultimately supportive of his work. The modern looking top left window was added for #Cezanne to bring more light to his studio. #art

#sexystaircases The entrance stairs of the Bethlem Museum of the Mind are guarded by 2 #statues, known as Raving and Melancholy. Not their original names, they reflect what at the time of creation in the 17th century were the main 2 categories of patients at the Bethlem Hospital. #stairs #sculpture

Still time to see the Between Waking and Sleeping exhibition at the Bethlem Museum of the Mind. The exhibition features artworks that reflect on dreams and mental health, many created by former patients of the Bethlem Hospital. #art #dreams #mentalhealth

There’s actually a stone mason who lives and works in the Bibémus quarry, near Cezanne’s home town, Aix-en-Provence. His beautiful house is without power and water, but does get pretty good 4G, so roughing it doesn’t get too boring. #art #cezanne #sculpture

The Bibémus Quarry is also in the hills near Provence. Cezanne was inspired by the unusual rock formations and the stone’s red colour and they appear in many of his paintings. #art #cezanne #impressionism

As it’s turning cold in the UK, it’s of course time to… uhm… post about my late summer holiday in Aix-en-Provence to follow the Cezanne trail. Provence was the painter’s home town, not that he was much loved there. These are the hills around Montagne Sainte-Victoire, one of his favourite subjects.

#BOTD author William Hope Hodgson. His years as a sailor informed many of his early horror stories. He would later pioneer cosmic and dystopian horror, with influential works like The House on the Borderland and The Night Land. He also created occult detective Thomas Carnacki #books #gothic

#BOTD Robert Louis Stevenson author of Jekyll & Hyde, Treasure Island, The Body Snatcher, Kidnapped & more. He wrote most of his classics in just a 10 year stretch before dying aged 44. He’s the 26th most translated author in the world, one place after Dickens. #books #horror

#newbook Explore a gallery of some of the most sinister & calculating criminals. Through 19 cases, we revisit early cases from history, through the serial poisoners of the 19th century, like William Palmer & Doctor Cream, ending on shocking, lesser-known killers from the 20th century #truecrime
November 10, 2025 at 7:28 PM
#BOTD Bram Stoker, author of Dracula. Stoker spent years writing what would become the definitive vampire novel but it was a slow-burn success that made little money. The biography of his boss, Henry Irving, was a much bigger seller. Other works include Lair of the White Worm & Jewel of Seven Stars

I forgot to post about the Dover bronze age boat I saw during my summer visit. Discovered in 1992, it’s 3500 years old, likely being in use around 1500BC. It could be the oldest seagoing vessel yet discovered. What’s been recovered is 9 metres long, it was likely much larger #history #archeology

Don’t think these actually appeared in Del Toro’s #Frankenstein (they’re extremely valuable) but at the Selfridges exhibition they have rare editions of the #book, including Lord Byron’s signed copy. Also displayed are the 1st illustrated edition & a book on Galvani’s theory of ‘animal electricity’

There’s an exhibition on at Selfridges of props & design from Del Toro’s Frankenstein. It created some mixed feelings in me, if I’m honest. I appreciated the detail, ambition & beauty of the exhibits, I just wish they’d put as much work into getting a coherent story onto screen #frankenstein #movies

My favourite episode of the podcast isn’t one that gets lots of attention. I confess to enjoying episodes with a touch of black comedy, and this one matches comedy and terror like no other. Listen here bit.ly/47zZQY7 or on your preferred platform‪‬ t.co/w20LdZ6PAW?a...

It’s easy to like episodes listeners really liked. My 2nd favourite has a bit of everything: jealousy surveillance, greed, ethics, social media, cancel culture. It’s not always ghosts you have to be afraid of. Listen now bit.ly/4hzJ9Rb or on your preferred platform t.co/w20LdZ6PAW?a... #halloween

1/2 I haven’t mentioned the podcast much of late as it’s on a hiatus. New episodes are coming (eventually). But as it’s Halloween, I thought I’d take this opportunity to talk about some of my favourite episodes. My top 3. Starting with episode 5… #halloween #ghosts #horror
