I am fascinated by the prevalence of this Sendai dialect mascot. You could even hold little speech bubbles with tokens of Sendai dialect in them!

Boosted, baby! See you on the other side of the delirium and sore arm.

Seen in the faculty office common area.
Image shows a collection of looseleaf tea tins and cylinders on a wooden table with a typewritten sign that reads "For display only. DO NOT REMOVE THE CADDIES AND TINS." In red ink under this someone has written WHY?

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

I have no idea if the flavor was authentic but it was definitely flavorful! Reminded me of very good pho in L.A. Noodles were also nicely chewy.

Rafael brought one of these home from My Basket and it was so insanely good that I immediately went back to the store and bought four more. Only 110 yen each and I think they might be vegan?!!

Me when the temperature finally drops below 25 and there's a bit of a breeze: Let us hike ALL THE MOUNTAINS! I will finally take up jogging! Parkour! No trains, walk everywhere! I am Nature Girl, cover me in leaves and flowers!

(Usually lasts about a day before I'm back on the sofa with a book.)

"The consumer does not care if what they're looking at is AI" YES WE F--KING DO.
britthates.bsky.social
Jason Blum's take on AI sucks. an AI takeover isn't inevitable, and treating it as such (while also referring to filmmaking as "content creation," smdh) helps AI companies promote the lie that their deeply unprofitable, destructive tech is more powerful and useful than it actually is.

PM me your contact info, native language, languages you feel comfortable lecturing in, and whether you're interested in hijokin, tokunin, and/or sennin positions. You can also email (link to my CV and contact info is on my profile page).
newsfromnihon.bsky.social
I'm frequently asked "if I know anyone" who might be interested in applying for various positions, and honestly my answer is usually no cause most people I know aren't actively looking. But if you ARE actively looking, or know someone who is, let me know.
newsfromnihon.bsky.social
Academic folks--there will likely be several hijokin (adjunct), tokunin (fixed-term contract), and sennin (full-time) positions available at my uni in the next year or two. If you want me to contact you when those positions become available, please PM me. Gonna make a list of interested people.

If you happen to pass by the digital billboard on top of the Eggslut/Luke's Lobster Roll building at the edge of Shinjuku Southern Terrace and catch a very brief ad for Takashimaya that plays every five minutes or so you might hear a familiar voice. 😀

I got one if those 'how can we improve?' pop-ups from Adobe recently and just ranted about the awfulness of that goddamn AI assistant in the comment box. Avoiding Adobe as much as possible these days because of it.

We need a bigger national spotlight on this building raid, fam. Agents dropped from helicopters onto the roof. Citizens and non-citizens alike were dragged from their homes in the night. People who weren't kidnapped during the raid had their belongings seized after the fact. This is madness.

I went to a Jane Goodall talk back in 2007, and she was such a wonderful speaker--so full of passion and excitement about her work and the world. In bleak times like these I try to remember that feeling. www.theguardian.com/science/2025...

Soup curry after a ten hour day, so good. Still doing spiciness level one but maybe I'll up it to two next time. #LivingOnTheEdge
