I was reminded of this just this week while running games for kids.
Kid: "Can I try to light the torch with my electric nunchucks?"
Me: "Uhh, maybe? Let's roll... Actually nvm, you can just do that."
Kid: "... I want to roll my dice though."
Me: "Oh! I see! Go ahead, roll Dex!"

Sometimes, players just want to play a game and roll dice for the sake of it wether the rules of the game say a roll is needed or not.

I was reminded of this just this week while running games for kids.

Thinking a bunch about how, if I were a D&D character, playing D&D, how I would go about trying to subtly poison a king. Assuming my character knows about stuff like strychnine, ricin, cyanide, tetrodotoxin, etc., what would the best strategy be to actually administer it?

There is a really interesting discussion happening on bsky about GM burden. I wasn't sure I was understanding it until I read a clarification about "what happens when your group can't play bc the GM is stressed."
I realized this isn't a problem I care about at all haha. It doesn't apply to me anyway
