Thanks to all who joined us @hulllibraries.bsky.social to hear from the brilliant JJ Connolly and then watch his equally-brilliant film, 'Layer Cake'. Film night returns January '26 🎥

No photos from the stage, but an absolute treat to go deep into the 'Layer Cake' world with JJ Connolly last night at @hulllibraries.bsky.social. The film still crackles and pops on screen 😎

Quite... my teenage daughter may have mentioned something to the Idlewild fan (me) as she got up at 5am to listen to her new album...

What a bizarre thing for the owner of a bang average Championship club to say...

Which Punk Anthem Was Written On A Bench On Cottingham Road?

Author and aging Britpopper @nickquantrill.bsky.social goes the Whole Wide World to end up on a (probably) different bench to Eric Goulden.

Great writer - looks like a fascinating book.

It feels even more horrific, and that's after allowing for the Reform guy and Cleverley.

And that first spell in Hamburg totally transforms them musically from a local joke into an absolute rock and roll beast. The Litherland gig must have been a lightbulb moment. What we'd give to jump in a time machine etc...

Yes, but I suppose at the moment in time, it could have been any drummer who was willing to commit? Feels like the Hamburg experience and how it tightens them up is more important as a driver for change?

Excellent question... I'll go for 1960 when they head to Hamburg for the first time. It's a settled line-up at last and the band becomes their only focus.
