It’s so important to me to cover economic abuse - so I was delighted to have the chance to raise it on the World Service. Insights from UK, USA, South Africa and more. Thanks to @nicolajanesharp.bsky.social and all my contributors, especially ‘Mary’ for sharing her experience so frankly.

Photo of a pile of books. The books are 'Debt Trap Nation' by Katherine Brickell and Mel Nowicki. Cover image features a woman and small child in a deep concrete basin or pit with no way of climbing out as the ladder is too short.

This Sunday (7th September) there will be a nationwide Emergency Alert test at 3pm.

For women experiencing #DomesticAbuse, a hidden phone can be a lifeline. The Emergency alert this week will trigger a loud siren noise, even if your phone is on silent.

Hugely grateful to a local printers for turning these flyers around in record time so that I could also take the opportunity to promote the @intlcoalitionea.bsky.social/NO MORE Global Summit on Economic Abuse which is taking place virtually on 18 November.

So much so that I left SEA last year to co-found @intlcoalitionea.bsky.social In a full circle moment, here I am with Rebecca Glenn who I met in Sydney (and who is herself a Winston Churchill Trust Australia Fellow) toasting our joint venture in Dubai earlier this year.

Applications open today!

A @churchillfship.bsky.social can help you #ChangeTheWorld My work to transform responses to #EconomicAbuse was inspired by my 2016 travels to the US & Australia. The learning I gained provided the blueprint for setting up @seacharity.bsky.social which now inspires others!

Before the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, the term #EconomicAbuse was not named or defined in legislation.

Four years later, and six in ten women have heard of it.

Having become an official ‘minder’ for a 4.5 mile stretch of the Monarch’s Way earlier in the year, I was excited to see it featured in this month’s edition of Country Walking with a great write up of its history too 👑

I feel like I talk into a void in this space but am left wondering exactly how old @bsky.app thinks I am??

Realised during Covid what we’d been missing out on. Just back from glamping in Norfolk. The weather just keeps getting better and there’s nothing like long walks with your dog and then a glass of wine and a nice meal at a countryside pub!

Watched the first 5 minutes of #MasterChef on iPlayer. Lots of presenter airtime - no difference to the editing that I can see.

✅ Consideration of gendered issues in sentencing. Female offenders are often victims of crime, with many coerced into criminality by male partners.

Economic abuse - such as non-payment of the TV licence - or its impacts - such as shoplifting to survive - are relevant here.

The final report of the Independent Sentencing Review by David Gauke was published on Thursday. Pleased to see:

✅ It recognises that victim-survivors of #EconomicAbuse not only want criminal justice, but also economic justice (referencing research I undertook with Kathryn Royal & Keith Gibson)
