There was a spell, but if you spent enough time gathering items to upgrade your equipment, you could also give at least one character deathproof on their armor. That plus letting some party members stay zombied after her second form made it much easier.

If you're able to have the means to survive certain attacks, yes 😉 It's only if you don't you have to keep seeing that cutscene.

And joking aside, that bit is one of the most powerful in the game, other than Home and Yuna's trial.

You're welcome! There's a bit more to it than that, but the important bit (and boy does this resonate now) is that killing her and getting rid of the Final Summoning is how you start the process of escaping the broken system in Spira and trying something new and hopeful.

Serious and short answer: first summoner, daughter of Yevon, turned her husband into the first Final Summoning to stop Sin. Now she's an unsent who gives the Final Summoning to summoners who make it to Zanarkand, thus perpetuating the cycle. Also, she's a nutbar who thinks life is hopeless.

Follow-up to last skeet: lots of Native American names there also got mispronounced. Iowa itself often did. Didn't live there but I imagine Dubuque probably does, and I guarantee Des Moines does too.
