EVANSTON, IL — Tonight, Tom Malinowski and Analilia Mejia are neck and neck in the the Democratic primary special election in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District despite an extraordinary spending blitz by AIPAC and its right-wing allies aimed at buying the race for their preferred candidate, currently trailing far behind in third place. According to news reports, AIPAC, its affiliated super PAC United Democracy Project, and other aligned entities spent millions of dollars on paid media attacking Malinowski, ads that made no mention of Israel or foreign policy. Now, AIPAC is turning its attention to Illinois, where it has already raised more than $1 million to support state Sen. Laura Fine’s campaign in Illinois’ 9th Congressional District, much of it from Republican donors. In fact, Fine raised more money last quarter from donors who have previously given to Donald Trump than from residents of the 9th District (link). “Tonight, New Jersey Democrats sent a clear message by rejecting AIPAC’s right-wing attempt to buy a congressional seat, and on March 17, Illinois Democrats will do the same,” said Daniel Biss, candidate for Congress in Illinois' 9th Congressional District. “Local residents know that Laura Fine’s campaign is being propped up by AIPAC and Republican megadonors, not grassroots support from the community she’s asking to represent. Voters in the 9th District want a representative who answers to them, not to Republican donors trying to rig another Democratic primary.”
