Fishing Net Transport No. 6 arrived in #Cherson today. Natalia #Nedostup once again took the trouble to record a „Thank You Video“. Shortly after unloading, they came under fire. - Everyone is OK.

People in despotic systems generally accept them as they do not see how to build an alternative. It is much more difficult to build a "moderate", i.e. rules-based government than a despotic one which is built upon "passion", i.e. low emotions.

It does not only matter how someone came to power (whether by inheriting a throne or by elections) as how this power be limited and bound to law.
Building a state around those principles is hard work.

Montesquieu further developed this concept. To avoid despotism, the state must be built in a certain way. Power must be divided which resulted in the theory of the "separation of powers" - a term he has not used.

"Liberty means to be able to do what the laws allow" remains crucial. 4/

Since, the idea that laws do not prevent, but guarantee freedom has become ubiquitous in Europe.

Lawlessness, meanwhile, has been seen not as a way to absolute freedom (as American Libertarians (see picture) and Russian Anarchists claimed), but a trait of tyranny.

Herodotus almost 2500 years ago developed the idea that obeying laws rather than tyrants, legal equality and the strife for freedom are the decisive traits enabling small European states to resist huge invading empires.
