A sycamore wooden box with separate lid. Dimensions 29.5 cm x 22 cm x 49 cm. The inside of the box is divided into compartments (covered over by the lid in photo). The exterior of the box is decorated with a painted checkerboard pattern, and with a lotus bud and blossom border. The box’s contents are displayed next it. Small jars and containers made of alabaster, others made of blue glass decorated with yellow and white festoons. Some still contain traces of original unguents and fat based creams. Found inside the intact Theban tomb (TT8) of Kha and his wife Merit in 1906. New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, reign of Amenhotep II-III (1428-1351 BC). An inscription, possibly added just before burial, states that the box is a funerary offering for Merit’s spirit.

Back in June, I biked to the far northwestern point of the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, to see a very special place

At Uig in 1831 the famous Lewis Chessmen were discovered in coastal dunes. Made of walrus-ivory they are Norwegian, C12th AD. This great carving of the king now stands close by 🤩

A VICTORIAN MERMAN

Objects like this were often made from the torsos of monkeys and the tails of fish. They were displayed by showmen like P. T Barnum to audiences who believed they were real. This particular one is on display at the Horniman Museum, London. #skystorians #histmed #histsci
