Boring is often the trade off to prevent readers from going on a tirade about how [character] and their actions is indication and reflection of [writer] and therefore they won't read any of their works. Seen it a lot. People unable to divide fiction from reality these days.

This has become a way to soften horror/trauma topics toward readers who are hyper critical of them. If the character is 'self aware' of their negative actions/behaviors then they aren't considered 'toxic' by the reader even if their actions otherwise would be.

It's made stories very boring, imo.

This is something I've experienced as well and I never know how to phrase it, but 'unsettling' really is the best word for it. I feel lost without being snapped at for my choices. I've been told it's a good thing to recognize it, which feels very strange when you're mourning the loss of the person.

The gameplay never clicked with me (xiv). I love Final Fantasy so it's not really it being FF that turned me off. I used to play ffxi on my uncle's account when I was a wee thing.. maybe I should look into it again.
