Actually it is the country we grew up in. That's one reason it hurts so much. We were never perfect but we were striving toward a better version of ourselves.
For people of my generation (I'm a Boomer) the decline casts a shadow on so much of what I thought were fixed features of my homeland.

Bigots have always used a cover story for their hate. We are seeing this with Bad Bunny and Zohran Mamdani. In case of Bad Bunny, bigots hate him bc he's proudly Latino. But Instead they talk his views on ICE. In case of Zohran, bigots hate he's Muslim but cite other reasons bc can't say the truth.

Encountered something similar at the Royal Opera House last year - the one Black person in our row was approached by staff because someone had complained that she was in the wrong seat. She wasn't. Staff were apologetic & supportive but it ruined her evening and upset her rowmates
