In my opinion (and without spoilers), this is the game's way of pushing players to learn how to dodge as part of their basic moveset. Encounters like these are not frequent, but will continue to happen. As for weapon upgrades, there are some indirect options ahead.

Someone zapped Maple with the shortstack spell, and she's kind of into it!

Maple, a girl made of pancake, has been slightly reduced in height and tremendously endowed with large curves. Her oversized sweater, thigh-high socks, and short shorts are straining against the sudden change in physique. In response to the effect of the spell, Maple responds with "O-oh! I see what's going on here! Ehehehehe... (I wouldn't mind if we kept going...)".

One of my computer classes had given students outdated textbooks, which were offset a few pages from what the professor was teaching us. I spent a whole day doing the wrong homework project and got a shrug in return. Good times...
