Brilliant piece by @willdunn.bsky.social

High rents allow a wealth transfer from young to old, with landlords taking spending away from goods and services and denying capital to other, higher-velocity businesses. They are a brake on the economy.

Our latest research has found that local councils are sending TENS OF MILLIONS a year to private landlords to encourage them to house those experiencing homelessness.

Read coverage of what we found in The Guardian:

English councils pay private landlords millions in incentives to house homeless families
Exclusive: Data gathered by Generation Rent shows 37 councils spent £31m in 2024-25 in one-off payments to individual landlords

Our research in The Guardian today.

Councils are essentially bribing landlords to the tune of over £30m per year just for them to agree to rent out their homes. It's a senseles waste of our public money.

Highest single incentive was over £15k!

The new Universal Works theme park in Bedfordshire should be exciting for locals, but private renters are rightly concerned about being turfed out of their homes & sudden rent hikes.

I spoke to the BBC about why this is another reason we need a limit on rent hikes.

Nearly 4m renters struggle to pay energy bills according to @generationrent.bsky.social.

I welcome plans to upgrade rental home energy efficiency.

But we need stronger protections to ensure renters can benefit from these upgrades without facing rent hikes or evictions.

As welcome as the Renters' Rights Bill is, there's still a piece missing - no renter will have genuine security in their homes until action is taken to regulate rent increases.

RRC press officer Paul Shanks writes in the @bigissue.com www.bigissue.com/opinion/rent...
The Renters' Rights Bill doesn't tackle high rents crippling renters
The Renters' Rights Bill is moving a step closer to law but while it offers renters more security, it won't help tenants pay high rents.

The ONS has found that rents have risen 6.8% over the past year, despite a 7.0% drop in May. Meanwhile, wages are only up 5.3%, meaning rent is becoming even more unaffordable for many.

The average unwanted move costs over £2k. Even with the ending of S21, landlords will still be able to evict to sell or move a family member in.

'Relocation Relief' would help prevent renters falling into debt, poverty or homelessness.

A great start would be capping rent increases

"If you're paying the average rent in London across 4 years, that's around £100k you're sending to your landlord."

By not putting a limit on rent rises, the Government is allowing a transfer of wealth from younger working people (to use its favourite term), to older asset rich landlords.

Rents are soaring higher and higher, the cost is not just to our pockets, but also to our futures.
