Hi there! I’m SS Julian, a cartoonist, designer and marine science enthusiast. I write and illustrate Octopolis, a scifi fantasy about a future where humans are extinct and octopuses have inherited the Earth! About time, right? Octopolis is self-published, get it at octopoliscomic.com
Announcement: I made a board book! If you've got a friend who's into marine animals but still learning numbers and colors, they'll love The Octopus Dinner Party!

Happy #Portfolioday!

I'm SS Julian, a Californian author-illustrator with a creative writing degree and a professional background in design. I self-published my comic Octopolis in 2024, hence the preponderance of cephalopods in my work. I enjoy drawing lots of different animals, including humans!

Only two instances have been reported, so there’s no indication this is a full-blown fad... it could just be a fluke.
Marine biologists are puzzled by the reemergence of a quirky orca behavior: wearing dead salmon as hats. The ocean's most intelligent and socially complex predators—the critically endangered Southern Resident killer whales of the Salish Sea—have revived a peculiar "fashion" trend first recorded i...

This is an important gap in the way the media and companies will explain AI and how it actually works:
There’s literally no way for Larian to have an in-house AI without relying on external datasets.

They can feed a model with their own data to the point where it matches a chosen style, but the underlying model is still 100% reliant on scraped (stolen) data.
Larian CEO says Divinity could have gen AI assets in it but only if the tools are trained on the studio's own data.

"If we use a GenAI model to create in-game assets, then it'll be trained on data we own."

Attention Bluesky elders: The artist behind the ANIMORPHS covers is here!
I did flipbooks for all of the Animorphs covers I did, but they appeared in black and white and very small, so I am posting them here so you can see them large and in color. No AI here--just Elastic Reality and painting. You can buy a signed print of this cover here:

I feel this sentiment, but the truth is more complex— it’s easy for people to feel extreme empathy for people within their own group and zero for those outside it.
There are dark moments in dark days I think it might be nice not to feel, but then I realize the reality we’re in is because a far-too substantial amount of people seem incapable of empathy, and I’m thankful I’m not one of them.

Real talk, BlueSky has been a nicotine patch for my social media addiction. The feed is rewarding enough to take the edge off, but not so much that I lose time scrolling.
