Due to the impending cold temperatures in Chicago, Equity's office will be closed tomorrow. Staff will be working remotely.

Chicago: unless you have been living under a (hopefully warm) rock, you should know by now that it will be stupidly cold tomorrow. How cold? The forecast high is 5F. But that high is at 12:01am. Daytime temperatures will range from -10 in the morning and WARM UP to -3 by sundown.

Chicago: Metra will be operating on a reduced schedule this Friday due to the extreme cold. Operating trains may also be running at reduced speeds (usual precaution with temperatures below 0). This may affect your cast, crew, and audience.

Perks of living in Chicago #328: it can get cold enough that your boots sound like tap shoes in the time it takes to exit your home and walk 1/2 a block.

Stopped by our local newsstand (pretty sure one of the few left in the US) to get a calendar & browse. Noticed the "Subculture" section.

Along with the expected skateboard, punk, etc.. magazines were bass fishing and fly fishing. Multiple titles.

So I guess your dad/uncle/grampa is cool now?

Agreed. I also wish people could see the last minute scramble before a show when any performer goes out sick last minute.

The general public would probably shocked at how may performance events are pulled/thrown/scraped together at the last minute, including those planned for over a year.

*No, this is not based on anything I'm currently working on, just an observation based on years in the business & a recent chat.

"...Right you are Jim! Check out Glenn Close in this highlight from last night's performance of 'Rockaby'."

"Just amazing, Tom! Meanwhile..."

Chicago: CTA Red & Purple line service suspended this morning between Howard & Belmont due to medical emergency on tracks. Shuttle buses being used. Allow extra travel time.

Continuing on this: back when a lighting console was truly a full console, with its own support structure. Also, I want every console ad to have people (real or painted) doing the “ta-dah!” pose.

I have people in my production team trapped in Venezuela. Yesterday they were visiting family expecting to fly back for Monday morning on set, now there’s no expectation that they are going to be here at all for the production, all flights are cancelled.

Continuing on this, “The Best Choice is Always Kliegl!” 3 ads for the Performer series of lighting consoles (one in color!), and a “Klieglights for the 80’s!”

Unfortunately, this period was near the end of Kliegl’s 100 year run. Many of Kliegl’s design concepts remain in use today.

My wife brought home a bound set of Theatre Crafts magazines from 1980, and I thought I’d share some of the ads we found. Some of which (like this one) I swear were still being run largely unchanged in the early to mid 90’s.

I have just been made aware of the current connection problem with the website (honestly likely just a coincidence unrelated to my recent posts). I am heading to a computer now to deal with it. My apologies for the inconvenience.

Discovered that the on-river location of the Chicago national NYE broadcast is at the opposite end of the river from the main location for recent years when it was just a local broadcast. What's at the new location? A big building to use as projection surface. What isn't there? The Trump Hotel.

The employees knew where the EXITS were. The audience did not.

Never block your EXIT signs, doors, or pathways.

Of the over 2000 people in the Iroquois at the time of the fire (audience, show employees), over 600 audience members were killed, and just 1 cast member (who was trapped on a flying rig over the stage). Even the pit orchestra escaped. #TheatreFireSafety

Current Chicago FD would have a similar response time as 1903 FD, due to traffic patterns. Same firehouse location, travel path & distance. #TheatreFireSafety
