Koulutuksen kärkimaa Suomi romahti.
#Suomi, entinen OECD-maiden #ykkönen, on vajonnut 38 maan joukossa sijalle 31. Ministeriöstä todetaan, että koulutustasoromahdus näkyy heikkona työllisyytenä.

I regularly work with people up high enough in the corporate chain where "I don't understand" is a magical legit argument for them instead of grounds from warnings to dismissal it is for the plebs
What a great headline

"A lot of people are highly critical of Event X* didn't attend it and are just salty they couldn't afford it" is not better criticism.

We need to argue event success on objective evidence and stated goals.

We have scene examples of "failed" megaprojects like Dragonbane LARP.

Many folks' final assessment of Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser---the closest thing to a multi-million-dollar larp experience we've ever gotten and one of Disney's highest-ever-rated attractions---came from a 4-hour complaint video about its game app, instantly accepted as sacred dogma.
Whenever I say this, people get Really Mad, but it's true. Same of any other art, too. You have to read the book, watch the film, see the painting, listen to the song, whatever.

I'm sorry, but watching a video about it on YouTube is not enough. You have not experience the art.

Companies pushing IOT devices that use external AI (off remote servers) should be legally required to add their externalized energy consumption (and necessitated hardware production & installation costs) to the consumption figures presented to consumers, and for calculating the associated taxes.

I got semi-recruited into lecturing for an amateur radio course at the local ham club.

Hoping the course material of our national association has improved, though I'm not holding my breath based on the coursebooks. >

It's cool to set back any personal expectations you have if they are holding you back from having fun with your hobbies. There's enough perfectionism in this world without inflicting it on yourself

Operating from Aspö island on the 23th of August. Managed some domestic contacts on 40m, and best of all local noise was close to nonexistent. Antenna was a 40/20m link dipole strung at treetops, around 2 to 3m height. Five watts single sideband, several reports RS 55. #amateur_radio #hamradio

It's great that finnish radio announcers laugh at their own jokes, so there's at least someone who feels entertained!

Ropecon 2025 was a blast. Theme of the year was "new worlds" with 10400 visitors, massive number of games, plenty of programme with presentations of just about anything.

Ran a couple intro games myself and presented a desk drawer project I call "Centauri Chronicle" based on Terra Nova: SFC.

Ham Radio Users Clash With Starlink Rival AST SpaceMobile Over Spectrum Use
AST wants to use the 430 to 440MHz band for a satellite-to-phone service. Ham radio enthusiasts say the company's plan is vague and could interfere with their slim slice of spectrum.

Went to the Aurora 25 finnish radio amateur league summercamp arranged by OH6AD this weekend. Had a great time, the location was fantastic and sauna stayed hot well into the night. Met lots of familiar faces as well as new ones. Sunny wx for four days and 30+ deg C, perfect for camping in pavilion.

Spent last weekend on a cabin retreat with SO recovering from the flu. Brought my gear along, trimmed a dipole for 20m and accidentally participated in the IARU HF contest. Got three contacts and probably logged them wrong, but it's magical how people suddenly respond when you call "CQ Contest" haha

Also, the Aurora 25 summer camp of the finnish radio amateur association SRAL is coming up as well. Some interesting talks, meeting old friends and doing some nerd camping is always a good time.

Ropecon is less than a month away!
I'll be running some games of Centauri Chronicle, and hosting a talk presenting the tabletop RPG. It's still a work in progress but I'm glad to have come this far with it.

Even if it would be very fast and easy to add a ton of gen-ai art filler into a roleplaying book, I don't think people should do that. It's ethically bankrupt, environmentally intolerable, and effectively self-sabotages one's imagination.

I'd rather publish a bland black and white booklet.

The book What Do We Do When We Play? about player skills in larp is now available as a free pdf! This great book includes one of the texts I am most proud of, "Beauty in Larp", about aesthetics of play and participation, written together with Jamie MacDonald.

Out of curiosity, does anyone (including @dfan.bsky.social ) know about copyright/IP owners of one classic Looking Glass game, "Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri" ?

The novel "Enemy of My Enemy" is likely still under original authors' copyright?

Curious for the setting for an indie nonprofit RPG.
