Maybe 10 years ago in an MA course for diaconate formation, we were discussing inclusive language and I asked if anyone was really bothered by the use of "brothers and sisters" when reading a Pauline letter at mass, and one of the wives who was also taking the course quite strongly said "yes."

During college summers, I worked for an investment bank. Some of my best friends are in finance. I was offered a job at a VC firm at graduation (which I declined). I have investment accounts.

Will the NYT give me space for an op-ed about much needed Wall Street reforms?

And who is the author of this op-ed? The billionaire CEO of an asset management firm who helped author the compact.

Also I am looking forward to any appropriate opportunity to say to someone "Eat shit, I'm a taxpayer"

Never, in a million years, would I have imagined someone asking me "do you want a limited series about President Garfield and his assassin?" but apparently the answer is a resounding yes.

Brought it up in class tonight and now they all want to discuss it (along with Dilexit Nos), so we're creating an extra meeting of class after the semester to do that. #myjobisthebest

I have not had a chance to read this yet (probably sometime next week), but ALREADY one of the students in my doctoral CST course has asked me to ADD THIS to the syllabus THIS SEMESTER.

Before the take-having begins, I always think of my old mentor Ralph Del Colle (RIP), who would say, “I try to let the documents take root in me.” Let’s try that today.

I’m game! I’ve been working my way into Ker’s biography and I’m reading some of his sermons along the way.

I had to read this with Hefling, I did not understand it then, I do not understand it now, but I have that and a pile of Newman i'm working through in the next year, so I will (probably not) understand it later.

I'm struck by Leo's amazing, low key, comprehensive history of Catholic Social Doctrine in Dilexi Te... a kind of forceful rhetoric of the breadth and unity of tradition.

Today in the AI and theology class we talked about the "Earth" chapter of Kate Crawford's Atlas of AI. To be honest, I had low expectations today, based on this period being midterms and my having a cold. But it was a great conversation, and they connected it well to Laudato Si (Tuesday's reading)

He didn't just skip thinking through it, he explicitly went 180 the other direction, saying "But the Cardinal electors obviously felt otherwise."

To be honest, I listened to the soundtrack yesterday and, on its own, it didn't do a lot for me. I'll probably listen through again before Friday. But I have gone back to the previous movie's soundtrack regularly since 2010.

I have read several reviews and all but one say the best case for the movie is as a delivery vehicle for the soundtrack (one review criticized the soundtrack as disconnected from the movie, although that might really be a critique of the movie)

I am very excited to go see TRON: Ares on Friday and be 90% disappointed

a fascist president, a corrupt president, a vindictive president, a senile president we might endure — but a pelagian president?

fwiw, the Catholic Church considers medical care a human right, which means it’s not accorded to persons due to citizenship but because they exist, which in turns means societies that desire to seek the good must offer such care.

Vance: "If you're an American citizen & you've been to the hospital in the last few years, you've probably noticed wait times are especially large & very often somebody who's there in the ER is an illegal alien. Why do those people get healthcare benefits at hospitals paid for by American citizens?"

I think I'm still just struck with the idea that a shortage of affordable care for the elderly was seen as a good case for robotic elderly care, but a shortage of affordable care for children was not seen the same way
okeydoxy.com
This is fair - in the class discussion, one student raised the example of the wealthy who have human nannies, and I noted two of my kids are in daycare. I think there's some difference between having a human care for children (or the elderly) than a (hypothetical) intelligent robot

Anyway, maybe I'll write this up later.

(2) The difficulties of caring for children are part of bonding with children and of becoming parents. Many of the hard things can in fact be good and important for our formation. This is also true of our relationships with the elderly. It's also true of our relationship with *thinking*
okeydoxy.com
The two points I wanted to incept for them, though, was (1) if we do not want to outsource care for our children, why do we want to outsource it for our parents? Maybe our duties to each are different, but are they that different?
okeydoxy.com
I'm still thinking through the exchange, but my suspicion is that they were operating on an underlying cultural script that is (a) babies are cute and desirable and (b) the elderly are difficult and can be put out on the ice floes (ok that might be an exaggeration?).
