Unconstitutionally taking money that the law says must be spent on one purpose & using it for something else—when it's to establish personalist control over the FUCKING MILITARY—is about as dangerous a constitutional crisis/failure as you can imagine

The Office of Management and Budget sent a notification to Congress about their intent to use research and development funds to pay members of the military, two sources with direct knowledge tell NBC News.

A spokesperson for the OMB confirmed to NBC News that it plans to use the research and development funds and that there are two years' worth of funds available within the Department of Defense.

"Wow, half of us got triple paychecks. Let's go and spend it now! Nothing bad will come of this."

Look forward to having to untangle that

Taps the sign.

Why even go to the negotiating table when the president claims he can spend without appropriations and rescind appropriations at will?
matthewshadle.bsky.social
I think it hasn't quite sunk in yet with the political class how much chaos there will be in a system where the executive branch can just spend however it wants, without regard to the will of Congress. I think at least some Democrats are starting to get it.

Trump said he deserved a cut for brokering the TikTok deal, and at once there was agreement that his son Baron would have a top executive slot... though he hasn't asked for it, and has no apparent qualifications to hold it. This is how Trump 2.0 works. www.telegraph.co.uk/us/news/2025...

On Thursday, the Senate unanimously endorsed amendments to the NDAA and seem set to repeal the 1991 and 2002 Iraq AUMFs.

To better understand the arguments for repeal, revisit Senior Editor @sranderson.bsky.social's two-part series, "How the 2002 Iraq AUMF Got to Be So Dangerous" below ⬇️

It seems to be conflating this incident with a completely separate one a few days ago, although even then it’s reliant on DHS’s initial report on that earlier incident.

Not going to lie, this sounds terrible.

All nonsense, of course, but if the point were to “give[] the minority a say” then the logic would require them to negotiate with Dems, not shut down the government and force them to swallow GOP priorities whole.

Interestingly, because in Peru’s constitution, a vice president can only be elected, not appointed, there is currently no vice president—since Boluarte had already become president. So if Boluarte is impeached, the president of Congress would become president of Peru!
matthewshadle.bsky.social
Boluarte herself became president when former president Pedro Castillo was impeached in 2022. She had been one of his two vice presidents. Castillo was arrested for attempting to overthrow Congress.

Peru’s Congress is on the verge of impeaching extremely unpopular president Dina Boluarte. Peruvian media is reporting the vote is expected to be almost unanimous, which is astounding.

A long time ago, I also noted this refusal to distinguish the abstract and the concrete in *certain* approaches to Catholic moral theology, in that case regarding the death penalty.

This is getting wild.

The states of Iowa, Montana, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and 14 others have just asked for permission to file THEIR amicus brief in IL v. Trump.
The States of Iowa, Montana, Oklahoma, South Carolina and 14 additional States
respectfully move for leave to submit the attached amicus curiae brief in support of Defendants
and their opposition to Plaintiffs’ requested temporary restraining order and preliminary
injunction. Proposed amici are States with a vested interest in federalism, the relationship between
States and the federal government, and deploying the National Guard. We also each have a vital
interest in supporting the President and Congress in enacting and enforcing valid immigration
laws. Every State has a responsibility to protect our citizens.
The federalization of States’ National Guard units is a matter of profound public
importance, as it directly implicates the delicate balance of power between state and federal
governments—a true cornerstone of Federalism. States generally maintain authority over their
National Guard units, allowing governors to deploy them for state-specific needs, such as disaster
response or public safety. Federalization of state National Guard units without gubernatorial

*Maybe* the most charitable interpretation of what Bovino meant is they can stop someone based on reasonable suspicion, while skipping over that the lack of proof of legal status (supposedly anyway) then establishes probable cause. But I’m not inclined to give the benefit of the doubt!
matthewshadle.bsky.social
Yes, for example that’s how Kavanaugh described it in his concurring opinion in the racial profiling case: ICE can briefly stop someone based on reasonable suspicion, then arrest them if they can’t provide evidence of legal status.
