"Rehmet believed the core message of his campaign—working-class solidarity—could be the glue in a winning coalition of unions, progressives, blue-collar voters, and disaffected Republicans. Early analysis indicates just how much that was true."
A Texas Democrat Just Won a Stunning Upset. What Does It Mean for November?
Taylor Rehmet’s victory over Leigh Wambsganss in a state Senate special election was low turnout, but the numbers send a message.

As mentioned in a different thread, this particular GOP candidate pissed off a lot of middle class GOP by trying to split their school district into mega wealthy vs middle class so some of this swing is outlier local politics.

Tarrant county doesn’t have independent voters good lord
+31 is a hell of way towards it though. Catastrophic changes among independent voters if you’re the GOP.

The read I’m getting from people determined to distill Taylor Rehmet’s special election victory in Texas down to “black and brown voters turned out because ICE targets the minorities ” is Dem’s self-soothing attempt to justify a determinate belief that Republicans are to be written off completely

You want to understand our political drift, you got to understand Texas. We are the horseshoe in your theory: Libertarianism and authoritarianism with our uniquely patriarchal religious glue that binds the two.

Who’s on your city council? Who’s on your school board?

Start there. You’re 10 years behind the work Texas has been doing.
about the worst thing anyone could be doing right now is thinking about how Texas politics plays in other states because it doesn’t

The best thing you could be thinking about are your states’ congressional maps and all your own uncontested races

Tarrant County shakin'
Here is Konni Burton, a conservative former state Senator from the area who was a central part of the Tarrant County Tea Party, agreeing that a Rehmet win would be a 9.5 on the Richter scale.

‼️‼️‼️‼️ With nearly all precincts in, Taylor Rehmet's lead has jumped to 57%. Absolutely stunning upset in a +17 Trump district.

Rehmet, a union chapter president, has largely avoided engaging with Culture War/MAGA issues, instead focusing heavily on labor, economic issues, working-class solidarity and other issues that he believes will bring over enough disaffected Republicans. Local experts say Democrats should take note.
ICYMI: This Saturday, progressive Taylor Rehmet squares off against a billionaire-funded Christian nationalist for a +17 Trump state senate seat in Tarrant County, a hub of the far right. Rehmet already over-performed, and is confident he’s on the verge of a stunning upset in a bellwether county.
In Tarrant County, a Hub for the Far Right, a Democrat Seeks a Major Upset
In a runoff election for Texas Senate District 9, which has not elected a Democrat since 1991, Taylor Rehmet is betting his pro-labor message can flip disillusioned voters.

Leigh Wambsganss raised nearly $2.3 million for the SD9 district, much of it coming from three billionaire-funded PACs.

Taylor Rehmet raised $346,000, most of it coming from donations of $100 or less. His biggest donor gave him $12K, and a bunch of local unions also cut him larger checks.

One thing that really stood out from my time with Taylor Rehmet is how incredibly on-message he was. Despite the temptation to dig in on the backlash to the local far right, including Wambsganss, he was laser focused on working class solidarity.

UPDATE: The Democrat won the latest batch of roughly 6,000 votes, continuing to dominate in the count.

The Election Day vote is bluer than the early vote day so far.

With 55K votes in, Rehmet is up 57% to 43%.

This is a 30% swing since 2024 for now.

Hard to overstate how big a deal a Rehmet win would be. Tarrant County is the epicenter of Christian nationalism in Texas, an incubator for far-right policies, and nexus of billionaire Tim Dunn's network, which is riding hard for Wambsganss. Rehmet almost entirely funded by donations of $100 or less
‼️‼️ Still a lot TBD, but Rehmet is leading early vote count by **13 POINTS** in a district that Trump won by 17 points. I'll be updating in this thread throughout the night.
