Minnesotan, professor, programmer. ICE out of everywhere.
Mill City Market this morning had a vendor doing very brisk business taking donations for anti-ICE signs, and several immigrant vendors were selling their usual wares (this Ecuadoran chocolate I'm eating right now is fabulous). Minneapolis carries on.

Longtime Carleton prof here, but also long ago I was an Ole. "Dry campus" should be viewed as aspirational (on somebody's part--not sure whose) rather than actually descriptive.

Also, yes, I agree with your original observation that Carleton's prez, security team, etc. are handling this very well.

Death of the Author, Nnedi Okorafor.
The Library Book, Susan Orlean.

Only O-authors for me. Guess it better be Orwell next (fitting, here in Minneapolis).

Northfield MN, pop. 20,000, on a chilly afternoon (-12 F with a little bit of wind). About 350 bundled up to march, plus a lot of cars and trucks beeping support (including some delightfully profane truck decorations--hands were too numb to get that picture, sadly).

The Powderhorn Park neighborhood has been the biggest target of immigration enforcement in Minnesota. It’s home to a large immigrant community who is now struggling to pay rent. Kidnappings are on the rise because people cannot stay home. Please help us out. Link is in my bio.

Flying around downtown Minneapolis and the Vikings stadium for the last two hours is a small plane trailing a banner: “Rick Scott. Hate socialism? Us too! Move to FL” #republican-wtf

More of the #NoKings Minneapolis crowd.

#NoKings Minneapolis. I couldn’t get high ground for a photo, but it was many thousands of people who love America packed into a dozen city blocks. Great atmosphere, great speeches, great organization.

I get why Walz encouraged cancellation of the protests in Minnesota. But I was proud to join about 1000 neighbors in Northfield, MN (pop. 15000 when the students are gone for the summer). Some Trump trucks drove by and revved, but we mostly ignored them. (A few birds were flipped...)

I'm looking for interesting gen-AI applications. I'm interested in hilarious failures and mind-blowing successes (if any) and anything between. Just trying to get my head around the state of things, and the hype is making it really hard to separate real stuff from bullshit.

Thanks for the good idea and the permission. Just purged over half of mine.

I take personal responsibility for not teaching young Sam that 100% = batting 1000. (I also wish I had had grown-up Sam to advise me back in my GMing days.)

My favorite part of this article is when Hegseth is quoted as saying "I will do all we can to enforce 100% OPSEC", while at that very moment using Signal on (presumably) personal phones for their operational security.

Voted for her every time (against a parade of monsters). Called her each of the last three days, leaving increasingly blunt messages. Just called her again. First time the line was busy, which seems a good sign from my fellow Minnesotans. But who knows if she'll cave anyway. I hate this.

Only 200? Must have been a short call. That girl practices her new phrases hard.

Big thanks to my friend @naomikritzer.bsky.social. Every election season, you help keep me from freaking out (well, mostly anyway). Hang in there, everyone.

Just come to one of our dinner parties. Weird physical component: old people complaining about how much it hurts to get out of their chair to get another shot of bourbon.

"No one will ever find out" is a very optimistic take on Spotify's likely behavior with respect to your data. Also, I'm now going to listen to Afternoon Delight by the Starland Vocal Band, thank you very much.

Definitely railroaded too much, but yeah, you were 8 and I had zero experience. I remember one time you guys decided to go the "wrong" direction, so I just flipped the entire map of the world east-to-west. What a blast you guys were.
