Thousands of newly arrived Long-tailed Ducks were seen in the southern Lake Huron basin yesterday… plus hundreds of other ducks. Waterfowl migration is ramping up!
Things are shaping up for a potentially interesting few days on Lake Huron later this week… North winds connecting James Bay to the Great Lakes, strong northwest wind for lower Lake Huron + a cold front. Definitely worth keeping an eye on from a lakewatching perspective
Wild storm moving through ON today… 20C or more in places, baro down to 992 hPa. Interesting weather for late Oct!

We just had a wind gust of 50 km/h. It's getting gusty out there!
Very good hawkwatching conditions for southern Ontario right now! The shorelines of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario should be particularly productive
Wednesday currently looks like a great day for visible migration watches across Ontario! Cool temps and clear skies. Maybe some early Golden Eagles & a Rough-legged Hawk or two👀
Cold front incoming! Expect a major changeover of migrant species over the next few days. Many warblers, vireos and other lingering migrants will be leaving the province for the year… while later migrants such as longspurs, sparrows and more arriving
Tonight and tomorrow night are quite favourable for nocturnal songbird migration, with light winds and clear skies. Expect a good surge of migrants moving into the weekend
This afternoon should be quite productive at Van Wagner’s Beach and surrounding areas in Hamilton! Strong east winds all day there
As of right now the winds look quite light (under 20kph), so it’s a bit hard to say how things will go. It could be a really good day at Lake Erie hawkwatches, or the flight could shift further inland in the winds gain more of an east/south component during the day
Tomorrow has the potential for good hawkwatching across southern Ontario ~ particularly along the shorelines of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

The wind speed will definitely play a roll in how the flight plays out along the shoreline, especially factoring in the potential for lake breeze in the PM
Decent conditions for lakewatching in Hamilton over the next two days ~ moderate east winds both afternoons. I don’t think it’ll be too crazy, but likely some jaegers & a Sabine’s Gull or two : )
Tomorrow could be a good hawkwatching day along the north shore of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, with a steady north wind for most of the morning/into the afternoon and clear skies. It will depend on how long the winds retains a northerly component though (it is meant to shift east eventually)
With the calm conditions, it will be a great night to listen to nocturnal flight calls too
Good conditions tonight for a strong nocturnal migration across Ontario! Very light winds with a slight northerly components in most areas & no rain in the way. Expect a nice influx of migrants : )
Not expecting anything too crazy ~ but tomorrow could be interesting for lakewatching on southern Lake Huron
Ideally we’d like to see more of a NW component for the winds over the lake though
Still a bit early to say how things will play out, but this cold front (arriving sometime around Thursday morning) is worth keeping an eye on… could be potentially quite interesting for lakewatching on Lake Huron
Some impressive shorebird numbers across Ontario today due to passing rain… mainly Simcoe and further east. 1000+ American Golden-Plovers in Simcoe stands out 👀
Fantastic migration conditions for the next several days ~ mainly clear skies, cool temps and long distance wind from the north… expect a large uptick of migrants across the province!
Some scattered rain in eastern Ontario overnight ~ but nothing too crazy to get in the way of movement
Solid migration conditions throughout most of Ontario tonight ~ cooler temps and north winds. There should be a nice influx of boreal breeders into the province tomorrow : )
Decent movement on radar tonight! There should be an uptick in songbirds across southern Ontario over the next few days
Two Jaegers (probable Long-tailed) seen in Hamilton today. Also a Parasitic Jaeger in Lambton
Lakewatching in Hamilton could be interesting tomorrow 👀 Still quite early in the season so it will likely be pretty quiet, but there could be some good birds! Maybe the first jaeger of the season
