someone just asked me to repost this as I just dropped off my old & insufficient Mazda 3 at the shop for repairs. If someone in NE has a dog-friendly, winter-ready car they aren’t using that I could use including for rapid response (& potentially live in) that would be incredibly helpful.

"[U]nhoused people were the most likely to be jailed multiple times across all the demographic categories we looked at ... This finding adds to the existing evidence of law enforcement's ineffective but disproportionate and deliberate targeting of people experiencing homelessness."

authoritarianism is harder and harder for me as someone who had her freedom taken away at 15, at a time when people were locked away for very long times for who they were

i grew up without control & consent over my own body — we do not want this for society

people are talking about “ages of consent” in very dispassionate and detached ways but it is rape and violent

children’s liberation is the way forward

no one is free, until everyone is free

A colleague invited me into a nonprofit consulting networking group. One of the informal leaders bills at $250/hour with less experience than I have.

I worked for an org where she was a Board officer. I was brought in at $35/hour.

It’s gross.

A just saw a job that I don’t have the perfect skill set for but I could do. It would take me out of the fray to build community for years. It would use my fundraising, org, facilitation, and financial management skills. It would be in nature I love.

Either give me a place to fight or…

I haven’t been able to eat (or even drink liquids) much. But I have a box of Annie’s Neapolitan bunny graham crackers and they’re alright.

There are wealthy people left of center. I’m not going to call them leftists. But they‘re caught up in career paths, organizing each other & so much damn content creation.

We need to shift from nonprofit & philanthropic careers to organizing jobs.

more jobs, fewer careers

Imagine if we got together and said: let’s do this for organizing. Let’s raise $207bn to pay organizers. It’s not impossible.

Also, who doesn’t love a good challenge?

Today a military aircraft flew into town that stopped my dog in her tracks. She’s unflappable. She doesn’t flinch at fireworks or gunfire.

I just looked over at my FB burner account and sure enough the first comment as always was: “sound of freedom.”

Maine, we need to divest from the DoW

You all can be in the DMs for the cut-rate non-carceral organizational consulting. I’m not joking. We’ll connect by signal & I’ll send you my consulting stuff.

strategy, fundraising, interim leadership, working w Boards, equitable comms, compensation reviews…even end of the year appeal issues…

Having a brass band is never a bad idea
Did not think to pack my tuba in my emergency response bag. Kicking myself.

Each time one of these stories hits I pause, lose a breath (which I’m sure shortens my lifespan), and wonder out loud to absolutely no-one: Have we learned anything?

Abolish all the police
Chicago launched a program this year that lets police file felony gun charges without getting a prosecutor’s approval. Two of the police officers who have overseen many cases under this program have 59 misconduct complaints between them.
New Chicago Prosecutor Empowers Police to File More Charges Without Review
In a predominantly Black area of Chicago, police can now directly file gun charges without a prosecutor’s approval. The new program rolls back a process that serves to check misconduct.

I’m not sure I’m read this piece on asymptomatic COVID before. It’s a good quick, must-read for those doing some of that traditional holiday stuff. I actually just saw a discussion of various VT town level wastewater data — and it was surprisingly high (to me).
Given that a significant percentage of infectious covid cases are asymptomatic, a more effective policy is to just require (or at least strongly recommend) masking! You can't really know who's sick and who isn't by symptoms or self reports alone. health.clevelandclinic.org/asymptomatic...
What Is Asymptomatic COVID-19 and Are You Contagious?
An estimated 1 in 5 people infected with the coronavirus never develop symptoms. But they can still get you sick. Learn more about asymptomatic COVID-19 from an infectious disease specialist.

As someone who has some theoretical grounding here, my short answer would be: hard pass.
Bringing businesses and rich capitalists into coalitions with workers means the rich entities will have the most sway. Compromises will be largely made in their favor because their influence and capital is “needed”. This must be understood and prepared for if that’s the strategy

Everyone who cares about writing, incarcerated people, and organizations should read this thread.

We must continue to do better in all of our various formations & speak truth to power when mission-promises are broken.

I probably shouldn't say anything while I am so upset, but I am so deeply upset, I cannot refrain!

Maybe in 2026 I’ll start signing everything with multiple closings that are really me but annoying such as:

solidarity,
love & revolution,
thank you for your consideration,

I’ve had one traditionally published book. No advance. First batch of royalties lasted abt 4 months. I live on a disability pension that covers my rent and a little for utilities. Food is scarce. I get a grant now and then, and when I don’t, it’s very rough.

Meta stole the book to train its LLM.
I know we know this, but authors need to get better at talking about how they actually make their money. Stop pretending it's from the books.

Dear friends in cars,

As an often town & rural pedestrian, I am here to remind you that people (and their pets) are walking on roads 24/7 even when those roads do not have sidewalks. Go easy this holiday and always.

Thank you for your consideration.
