If you're in California, find a local Democratic club (there's no good list that I can find, so search for "<your county name> county Democratic clubs") and just show up at meetings. They recruit and groom local political candidates and you can get in on the ground floor with those efforts.
I really can't emphasize enough that if you care about local politics, all you gotta do is show up. Just a regular schmegular person showing up. Literally just show up consistently in person and within a remarkably short amount of time, you will have a shocking amount of influence.
