Former Marine and DeKalb County officer David Rose was shot and killed in August when he confronted a vaccine denier attacking the Atlanta office of the Centers for Disease Control. He left a wife and three children. If anyone deserves half-mast flags and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, it's him.

Next on our list of champions: Tara VanDerveer. In 38 years coaching at Stanford, she nurtured generations of young women, won three national championships, and retired with the most lifetime wins in college basketball history. She was a tireless advocate for the sport.

Led by Sonja Hogg, Leon Barmore and Gary Blair, the Lady Techsters of Louisiana Tech won the AIAW championship in 1980, the first NCAA tournament in 1981, and a third title in 1988. The team, which featured point guard Kim Mulkey, led the nation in attendance from 1981 to 1984.

Our parade of champions continues with the Lady Monarchs of Old Dominion, propelled by legendary players Nancy Lieberman and Anne Donovan, and by coach Marianne Crawford Stanley, a three-time national champion with Immaculata. Old Dominion took the title in 1979, 1980 and 1985.

On Saturday, when Texas defeated Tennessee in a close, dramatic Sweet Sixteen game, spectators included legendary Texas coach Jody Conradt, who racked up 900 wins in a 38-year career, and who led the Longhorns to an undefeated season and the national championship in 1986.

Here at the NCAA Birmingham Regional, we ran into some Tennessee reporters. Of course we talked about the great Pat Summitt. One of the toughest parts of our second edition was chronicling Pat's all-too-early death. But it was also clear her influence would last far longer.

Women's basketball became an Olympic sport in 1976, at the Summer Olympics in Montreal. Despite previous struggles in international competition, the US team brought home the silver medal. Publicity for the team and its unexpected accomplishment raised the sport's profile.

From 1975 to 1978, Mississippi's Delta State University dominated the women's game, winning three straight titles. Star Lusia Harris, one of the school's first Black students, became a key player in the first U.S. Olympic team, which won the silver medal in the 1976 Olympics.

As we head to our book signing in DC, we're reminded of Chris Weller, who coached at Maryland from 1975 to 2002. Frustrated by a lack of opportunity at home, Weller helped to organize a college club team and "felt like I grew and found myself." She ended up in the Hall of Fame.

Women's basketball thrived in Philadelphia, with the Catholic church a prominent supporter. Drawing on local players that included Marianne Crawford, Theresa Shank (below, left) and Rene Muth, Immaculata College won three straight national championships from 1972-74.

The NCAA had nothing to do with the start of women's sport history in the US. If anything it worked at every turn, for decades, to discourage and even eliminate opportunities for women's competitive athletics. If you want to know more about women's athletic leadership - check out the AIAW!
