For #day15 of #artadventcalendar I'll share the lil sketch I did at the botanic gardens w/ @rmsbartists.bsky.social yesterday! I posted up in front of the orchid wall and used a fine micron, a white caran d'ache luminance pencil, and a Derwent inktense for the background, all over gray Strathmore.

The rest of the story on the iris, for #day14 of #artadventcalendar ☺️ I used bright yellow and orange colored pencils to create the fuzzy bit before surrounding it with watercolor so it would resist and remain bright and defined. I love the way the dry brush technique highlights the sparkly petals.

For #day13 of #artadventcalendar, another process series for a large iris portrait from May. I sketched in the yard larger than life, then brought it in and transferred to a huge sheet of paper (hand for scale). I started in with gouache for the stem and watercolor for the translucent petals.

For #day12 of #artadventcalendar I'm closing the loop on the Crabapple carbon dust piece I have shared a few process images of. Here it is in its gorgeous cherry frame. It's luminous because it is on translucent film. Last picture shows the film rolled to see the colored pencil on the back.

#day11 of #artadventcalendar is this second teeny painting, this time of a peony blossom, again on a 4 inch wood panel. This one got snapped up at a market this summer! It looked good on my mantel with gnome, birds, sunflower friends before it went to its new home tho 💖 Gouache and colored pencil.

#day10 of #artadventcalendar: my painting for an artist Telephone Game. Each artist received only another artist's submission as a prompt, with no context. The one I got was a video of squashing avocados. Thru the botanical artist filter— Voila! telephonegame.art/artists/brittany-hass

For #artadventcalendar #day9 , a cactus trio I painted in a class thru Denver Botanic Gardens' School of Botanical Art and Illustration. This was in colored pencil, watercolor, and gouache. I think I spent more time on the silly little rocks than the plants... Whose idea was this composition?!

For #day8 of #artadventcalendar ... A pothos and piano painting I sat on for YEARS and then finally finished recently. I really love it so I'm glad it hasn't sold. It's gouache and I underpainted with metallic gold, so a lot of that shows thru 💖 Who else grew up with Schirmer editions like this?

For #day7 of #artadventcalendar my pile of interesting, to-be-drawn bits of wood! Any botanical illustrator has a stash like this. 🤪 I'll draw them eventually!!!

#artadventcalendar #day5 is a look at my workshop print for today. I've already had several excited art makers come thru and make custom prints with this set! There are 5 modular vertical strips to this one. I have several other pieces that can rotate in 🤩

#artadventcalendar #day5 is more progress on my big old crabapple tree in carbon dust. You can really see some of the colored pencil color popping from the reverse side of the film here! #carbondust #botanicalillustration

For #artadventcalendar #day4 ... A little unfurling monstera leaf in colored pencil on a tiny cradled wood panel. These little guys are especially nice to walk past on the wall as the drawing interacts with the edges of the panel, changing the composition at different angles. #botanicalillustration

#artadventcalendar #day3 is a throwback to the inaugural Sunday Sketching outing I helped coordinate as part of the board of @rmsbartists.bsky.social . We met to draw in the Boettcher Conservatory at Denver Botanic Gardens. We've kept it up all year! LMK if you are local and would like to join us.

For #artadventcalendar #day2 I am sharing an in progress image of the carbon dust tree illustration I made early in 2025. The original is now touring with @rmsbartists.bsky.social Trees juried show in Colorado and Wyoming. I'll share some more updates on this later in the month! #carbondust #art

For #artadventcalendar #day1 (reposting cuz forgot alt)... A linoleum printed notebook cover I made last January for my design clients and connections. It shows the mnemonic of using your knuckles to remember the lengths of the months, which I use all the time! #linoleumprint

My brief thoughts on "Death by Lightning" -- the new Netflix series about the assassination of James Garfield, based on the book "Destiny of the Republic" by Candice Millard, one of the most entertaining historical novelists of our era.

Top of my mind: superb casting.

Is it just me or is the latest release of InDesign like ....nonfunctional?? I can't get it open without dumping prefs and I also can't get a save dialog box to render. Which pretty much means I can't use it. Remote desktop guy has been trying to resolve for 30 mins now 🤦🏼 #designerproblems

These are .... the coolest. 🤯
I was shown C. F. Payne's state bird paintings and they're amazing.

Just dropped this and several other originals and prints off at Arvada Center for their Holiday Market. I can't wait to go back and see the show all set up, it was positively buzzing with artsy energy today in the main gallery! The show opens Thanksgiving weekend and runs thru Dec 14 😍

There will be another 60 vote Friday* on the garbage shutdown deal. If we can convince just one Senator from the 52 republicans and 8 Dems that voted yes to flip, we could still stop this. Please jump on the phone today, call them, and share this widely.

*If all goes by the regular schedule
